Oh the pain of being,
Disappointment of seeing
The continual decline of living.
Yes, I’ve seen the decline
In elder parents of mine
Now departed from living.

What can I expect to be?
What devastation will I see
Before my last breath?
War widows are crying
As society is slowly dying
Diminished with every death.

And yet I still remain
Of old age infirmaries complain
In each climb of the stairs;
Physical pain is plain enough
But emotional detachment is tough
Grinding deep into my cares.

The pain lessens in deep sleep
That follows a brief weep.

Gloom

Good to read you again, and this one unfortunately I know all too well.  I suppose if everyone in this certain age group would sit down, and "could" write such as this, this would have been their lament as well.

And yet I still remain
Of old age infirmaries complain
In each climb of the stairs;
Physical pain is plain enough
But emotional detachment is tough
Grinding deep into my cares.

Sometimes you just have to wonder why each day and the next we push one foot in front of the other, must be hope?

Loved this.

Sigh, dear Professor Gloom. A wonderful poem, though very sad.
It is as you say, I have witnessed this often.
Better we know not ... To be fit till the day comes would be the best, but it seems a gift for few.

Love,

a VERY touching write; After reading, "What can I expect to be?" Your poem makes wonder, is it good not to expect?  A fine write.

Glad to see you posting again, Professor Gloom. Getting old is not for sissies, that's for sure, but there's not much we can do about it.
The alternative is not very appealing either,

Hello, Professor! The aging process can indeed be a painful process! ~ and losing our elderly loved ones is one of the most painful aspects of that process.

Take two aspirins, go to bed, and call me in the morning. ~ Oh, if only it was as simple as that.

Just remember...when you have no expectations then you can enjoy the day's surprises.

Oh, that's a sad thought. I hate hearing about elders passing, but look at it this way. They are in a better place. Tender write.
