Many many years gone, like lovers I remember some, others well, memories dry like tears in time, inert until a catalyst stirs unexpectedly from dustbins where they sleep waiting, motes for errant dreams; staccato cracks, gunfire in the night street hustlers settling negotiations gone astray, or reparations for an ego slight, real or too imagined, fueled by dreams of grandeur and by far too much testosterone, street theater improvisations. Shots and engine thunder, underpowered over loud all that children know today; car wheels screaming in protest engines pushing redlines of stress, just a block away by sounds; fading now, disagreements being tallied somewhere else; at best a minor news story for my morning tea. Too suddenly stir thoughts of older days; a half century and so many miles ago a different world, was it really me back then? Memories will stay awhile, images like retinal scars tracing misbegotten light, phantoms racing chasing through almost forgotten night, power's wild feel of horses by the hundreds pushing cars of steel beyond all edge of reason, spitting shattered windshield glass, hands sticky drying bloody steering wheel, firefight in flashes burned into my brain, I remember when the pain began I knew I had survived. Still, I am alive; with time and proper anodynes, sleep may help me yet tonight to cleanse the itching stains of memory. ©2009 by icebox . . |

"Too suddenly stir thoughts of older days; a half century and so many miles ago a different world, was it really me back then?" Such poignant writing, as usual. Enjoyed this beautifully written work. |

Charlie, you never fail to touch my sensitive side and make me want to read that book you carry around within your shell. I am so glad you can write like this and am in hopes it helps to cleanse your innermost memories, like sweeping cobwebs and clouds away. Sincerely, jo perry |
