              FOR A GOOD CAUSE

A public minded young fellow with enthusiasm displayed
Was out collecting money for the Wagga fire brigade,
He had several good donations towards the target he’d set
And thought if this rate should keep up the amount will be met.

He knocked on the door of a renowned miserly old maid,
Hoping for a donation, he said,“good morning Miss Slade,
This morning I’m collecting money for a very good cause
And I have been sent to this district to knock on all doors.”

The old lady leaned forward, her hand cupped to her ear,
She said,“you’ll have to speak up if you expect me to hear,”
He spoke a bit louder and said,“ would you make a donation,
I’m out collecting money for the Wagga fire station.”

“You’ll have to speak louder,”said the old lady once again,
“Don't jumble up your words and try and speak plain.”
His patience growing thin, he yelled out with much force,
“The fire brigade need money to keep our program on course.”

“I still cannot hear,”said miss Slade,“it’s nothing serious I trust,”
With a blank look on his face he walked away in disgust.
It just not worth the effort, he thoughtfully said to himself,
It’s certainly no wonder she got left on the shelf.

As he walked away down the path in a most irritated state
He heard Miss Slade call out, “put the latch on the gate.”
Oh damn the gate, he murmured, with his irritation displayed,
And heard Miss Slade yell back,And damn the Wagga fire Brigade.

Lindsay, it's great to see you back posting again! I've missed you and your sense of 'hoomah'!

Lindsay! *S* What a treat it is to see you posting!! *S* This is delightful... Unfortunately, there are plenty of Miss Slades in the world... not willing to help... but expecting (and of course, getting) immediate response when they need the very people they've turned down. Well done!! *S*
