where the wild flowers grow

0 posted 2009-08-09 03:33 AM

He held me like
I am a home. Complete
with furniture
and flatware. And on
my canopy, lies the shade
of forever autumn
and the kind of wind
that reminds you of a
relieving breath.

And ten miles down my road,
lies a graveyard full
of mothers, of children
divided by the Earth.
An eternity's worth of time lost,
and time spent
when we couldn't afford it.

I can only pay you
in pennies and pride, my love,
can you accept my tender
dying heart so
burnt by heartless lights
before the dawn could speak
in the hushed voice
so gently comforting?

It is
okay
if you can't understand,
or if you don't
want to speak about it.
I will not tell you
anything that you don't want to know.
And that
will not ever make it
a lie.

I remember you, mama,
when I was so afraid of the words,
and I couldn't ever tell you of my hurt,
because I was so afraid
to wound you with it,
Mama? Can you remember
when I was young and playful,
outside in the puddles,
and having no fear of the rain
or the lightening but instead
counting the seconds and making them
miles and miles away...?
Can you forget
all that I said
when I put my soul beneath the floorboards
like a dirty secret?
I keep those times from you still,
and only imagine how it would feel
with your arms consuming me,
and the warmth I so loved
when I was so small and frail...

The time is coming now,
and I look so forward
to seeing my breath,
melting the air around me
to
remind me that I am alive.

Gloves
on my hands
throwing snowballs
at your car
when you come home
to make me
feel
safe..

He held me, mama,
so tight and so nice,
so warm and so secure.
He hurt me hard
re-opened the summer scar
and though
you didn't know
you always knew
I'd never tell you...

...that no love is
as complete and everything
as your love,
and his heart is charred and
silent,
while mine has the power
to heal
and speak.

I know you'll always have faith in me.

There is much pain hidden behind this beautifully written and moving poem.  Yes, what would we do without our mothers, I have so much to thank mine for.

A truly wonderful write. It takes courage to go through our lives with the weight of pain on your back. I applaud your bravery in keeping that pain from your mother when all you want to do is be wrapped in her comfort. I'm sure she does have tons of faith in you young lady and love too.

Meg, this is so beautiful. I think though that a Mother always knows, even  all that we don't tell them.

I never always know what to say...but I've felt this before..

The only time we waste is the time we spend thinking we are alone.

Kaoru,

I so admire how you beautifully you express your feelings and ideas through introspection.
You appear to have such a sweet and gentle heart, a strengthened one.

   A very touching poem.

O I know this too......
Like remembering a time before you learned how a boy could break  your heart.
Mama knows too ,her love is unconditional and a place you could always come home to
Most beautiful cry of a daughter's everlasting bond with mother

This made me cry, Meghan. You are a true poet. Perhaps you were given theis special gift to make up for the hurt.

Meghan,

Like Ida, I cried.  When I finish writing this comment, I am going to go down the road to hug my Mom and invite her out to dinner.  You know, I really like the structure of your poetry.  You break your lines in the best way and your message is powerful and poignant.

Thank you.
