When my mother would say, "It's time for bed" I would fight it with all my might, for even as a child it was always my nature to come alive at night. The only thing that brought me rest was the sound of a train far off in the distance. It calmed my mind, wore down my resistance so I drifted away, ran out of steam as it carried me away... away into a drean... Into a dream. Ida |

Yo dear Ida, I grew up with trains, trains all over the place, in Altoona, PA. It was smoky, and dirty, with soot all over the place. This is a nice write. Love Bobby |

OK, I could use a few trauns , these days, because like you, I seem to come awake at night and this is the time I do most of my writing, although I really would love to be sleeping !(lol) Jan |

I love this so much, dear Ida. Yes, there is something in the rhythmic sound of a train that is soothing and induces sleep, especially when one is aboard the train itself. But also in distance, as you say. The beautifully poetic snapshots of your life always bring back memories of my own childhood. We lived rather near the train-rails. The Swiss trains being always in time, we woke up and jumped off the bed when the morning trains passed by and we were always in time, for school, for work, for church! Thank you for this beauty. Love, Margherita |

My dear Ida Belle, I'm with you on that! ~ What else is new? lol A train in the distance is such a comforting sound. It is as though my troubles are carried away down the line and I can slip peacefully off to slumber...zzz zzz zzz Perhaps you could look on the net for a sound machine or a soundtrack with that comforting sound so that you could play it at night. My sound machine has the soothing sounds of the ocean, thunderstorms, crickets & frogs, rainfall, rainforest, birds etc. I would like to get one with tracks of whistling winds and distant trains as well. chooooo choooo Sweet Dreams, Linda |

We have track within eye sight of our house, but the trains don't run any more. They seem to be part of yesteryear. I remember the lonesome sound of the whistles as a child, too, and the rumble of the wheels on the rails. Your poem takes me back. They must have fascinated my brother and I. We ran away once when I was so small I can't remember and crossed the switch yards in the town where we lived. I don't know how my mother found us, but she tied us to the clothes line after that whenever we were outside. The reminiscence in your poem is wonderful, not only for you, but me, too! The trains are from a very different era. |

Ida - I too can hear the trains as they went by the house. Good memories. Perhaps that's why I like trains so much... BC |

Ida, I so enjoy reading your poetry. Your poem about trains reminded me of when I was a teenager. We use to live right next to a train track, when I was about 14 years old. That's been so very long ago. LOL! Anyway, my brother would bring the hobos home for mom to feed. He even said that when he got big, he was going to be a hobo. Of course he didn't. |

Fine writing...reminds me of a period in my childhood when I lived in Japan in a house with a tin roof that was fairly close to the train tracks and it was wonderful to hear the rain beating on the tin roof and the sounds and vibrations of the trains going by while laying in bed at night...James |
