![]() Old oak with wrinkled trunk and furrowed arms I am the ghost of summer and I love To linger long within your golden charms And stir your crown of glory high above While you are reigning in your strength of heart Still singing of a season now grown old In which life's dazzling colours have no part So sing old friend your twilight song of gold Which soon will blow away in autumn rain Until once more sweet springtime smiles on you To kindle your cold heart and roots again Your pale green buds unfurled in skies of blue Our parting leaves fond thoughts of you behind To haunt the sentiments that burn my mind |

A sigh escaped my lips, after reading your wonderful sonnet, dear Katriona. This spectacular oak has inspired you profoundly and your words of perfect harmony fill my heart with awe. Love, Margherita ![]() |

Thank you sweet Margherita, yes the oak tree is my all-time favourite tree, and in Britain we have the most beautiful old oaks, although I know there are both bigger and older ones in the US, I believe they call them redwoods ? I talk to trees you know ! They are living creatures, and I cringed and cried last weekend when I came back home and my neighbour had chopped down many of the lovely old birches which stand on the border between his and my property claiming the sun didn't reach his porch..... (Although they were on his side.) Love Katriona |

Loved the ending couplet: Our parting leaves fond thoughts of you behind To haunt the sentiments that burn my mind My favorite poems are English sonnets. And you are as always, amazing. |

Dear Lady Katriona, your sonnet sings to my soul. You wrote of the glorious and mighty oak with reverance and appreciation. "So sing old friend your twilight song of gold Which soon will blow away in autumn rain" ~ Only to return next sprin in all its majesty! ![]() A nobel tree of this magnetude must surely reign suprem in the land of Shangri-la. ![]() ![]() ![]() Linda |
