Summer Suffocation The air is still; it’s muggy hot The clouds look bruised as they hang low Then thunder volleys breaking shots As windows frame a lightning show The sky now casts an eerie glow While clouds are thick and there's no rain There’s only stifling heat that grows And batters at the window panes - Alison |

Oh! My Dear, you must have been in Idaho lately. The trouble with this kind of thing is what we call drystorms and they cause dry lightning and the fires, we have a lot of trouble with them in the summer time, I would rather have a good rain. Love 'un stuff Billie C. |

Hi Billie, I know just what you mean. Interior Alaska has lots of dry lightning and forest fires. Guess that is why Idaho and Alaska are home to the smokejumpers that we have. Thank you for reading. ...beautiful write, Allison. Those summer storms are awesome to behold! We did not get our usual thunderstorm on the 4th this year. This took me back a lot of years to when I watched electrical storms in the purple heat of summer from my grandmother's window as a child. She lived in the Grand Ronde Valley which is in the Blue Mts. of Oregon. The sheet lightening would set the entire ring of mountains in relief as the earth trembled. There was jagged lightning, too, of course, and I felt infinitesimally as it flicked like a snake's tongue through the sky. I'd shrink right into the woodwork, but I was mesmerized, just the same. and could not bring myself to take my eyes away from the fury of it all. Karen |

It's pretty hot here but not humid. A few years ago I went to Dallas Texas for a couple of days and the humidity was awful. I'm not used to that kind of humidity. Rispetto... hmmm I didn't even know what that was but I do now, thanks to your excellent example. |

Hi Karen, I think that Idaho, Washington State, Oregon and Alaska all share intense wild land fires. Alaska is being hit hard so far this year - but I am sure you will all catch up. It's a normal summer for us - luckily we have lots of land and it is not a huge impact on man or animals. Alison - Misty Lilacs, It's hot - and I have an AC to put in my window. But, I don't want to pay the electric bill .. so I just keep a cross ventilation going. Thank you for reading. Alison - Ida, We don't get humidity often but seem to have some lately. A - Rick, Thank you so much. I am really trying to learn. Alison - shel, Thank you, dahlink. A - Diana, I saved you for last because I knew I would write the most when replying to you. Interior Alaska is usually hot. Like many interior regions, it gets cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Many say this is 'global warming' but, honestly, I think the warm winters and cool summers are more of a sign of global warming in this part of Alaska. We had a cold winter and now are having a very hot summer. Our temps have been into the 90's and hover into the 80's a lot right now. We aren't getting much rain, but we do get dry lightning storms. Those are what start most of our forest fires. Over a million acres have burned in Alaska so far this summer and there is no sign of relief yet. Fortunately, no towns are threatened and usually animals have time to move from the burned areas. Also the burns provide new growth which is good for moose to feed on. We have categories of fires here. Critical, Modified and Limted fires. Critical are always fought because they threaten towns, homes or privately owned or Native owned land (only about 3 % of Alaska is privately owned). LImited fires are allowed to burn after a certain date. That starts at midnight tonight. Anyway, I am rambling - but, yes - we get storms like I described in my poem. Thanks for being interested.
