She told us we were mean And we believed She told us we were dumb And we believed She told us we were ugly And we believed She asked us how anyone could like us So now I ask you Am I really these things? Or is she just jealous? She told me I couldn’t write And I believed She told me us we weren’t right And we believed I’m scared she might be right I’m scared that people will see through me And see Ugliness A black heart A dead mind Will they still like me? Call me their friend? What if all my doubts come true? She said they would… She told us our dreams won’t come true But hers will Because she deserves them And we don’t? We don’t deserve nice friends But she does? We don’t deserve nice things in life Because she doesn’t want us to? I don’t think that’s how it works. I don’t think you have a say. I don’t really care right now. You do this to everyone, anyway. You use your insecurities as a base To tease everyone else You believe you are dumber than us So you belittle us into believing we are stupid You believe we are prettier than you So you belittle us into believing we are hideous freaks You believe you’re not going to reach your dreams So you belittle us into believing we won’t either You believe you aren’t going to be happy So you belittle us into depression Yeah, it’s all fun and games for you But to us it can shape our lives Do you really believe I am weak enough To believe what you say? To believe I am so dumb I can’t achieve my dreams? These aren’t the questions we should be asking ourselves I think we should ask: Why are we friends with you in the first place? Sadness, like happiness, has its own majestic beauty and must be embraced as a valid emotion, not pushed down as an abnormality. |

Oh my gumbo. This poem shows a very probing insight and some real wisdom behind the lines written. Though it's imperative in this forum to assess the poem and NOT the poet, I cannot help but to be impressed with both. ·´~`·»Garapan«·´~`· "Look! Crumbs on his jacketses... Heeee took it!" |
