At Least I Know I’m Free Crisscrossing reds on starchy white, blue quilting beneath for support You are an American flag, standing for victory With you, the war is won I trace you with my fingertips remembering, relishing each tingle. every line, the perfect storybook of times too tough for words these battles are long gone yet soldier’s wounds are eternal badges sewn, medals on skin I will never forget Never forget! cries the slice to the foot Never forget! these burns burn like new Never forget! My heart is still splitting from bloody words that spread like poison through veins They say I caught trench fever caught up in the pain of the war- but I wear these red scars prideful. these, lines of misery, lines of hurt, lines of immaturity yet childish wisdom, disbelief, hatred, confusion, fury raging, hearts blazing, feeling worthless, pitiable, dictatorial all at once, these self-created wounds are my most honest friends |

Awesome work! I loved it! "When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car" |
