apple ice cream stain child lips
the first innocent red smile
of laughter and games and sweet bliss.
oh to be juvenile.

a second smile,
grown up this time
and yet still so young
a twelve year old with a scarlet pout
thinks she looks sublime.

her third smile
has one perfect kiss.
a new wearer of red lips
a first love.
a first reason to doubt.

girl's heart breaks.
her lip stains red from
cuts.
desperate to hide the scars
her own hand creates.
gone is her smile.
