Ode to My Sweater by Cara Given to me by a past friend A time ago when I was younger. Dark shades of grey In its delicate body, With many holes and tears. It comforts me still When my heart is ill. When I wear it I can almost feel His calming arms Wrapped around me once more, Sheltering me under his wing. The sensation I feel when I see it, Joyful, my soul sings Like a child on their birthday. My sweater has aged, It is worn and used, Still precious in my life No matter how tortured. The days have been painful, Cold without him. When I put on my sweater The warmth of his love Spreads through my veins, Releasing the weight of my fears. My sweater is a companion That I need each passing day, One I am sure Will never leave me. We function as one. I am alive If the sweater still breathes. Our last sigh exhaled Will be shared. Relieved, We will meet again. Any suggestions, comments? |

Cool poem! Very interesting! I enjoyed reading it! βAll bad poetry springs from genuine feeling.β--Oscar Wilde |

I'm not going to lie, when I saw the title I expected this to be a silly poem. But reading it, I found a beautiful expression of a sentiment that was well-expressed and wonderfully written. Great read, keep writing! ~Taylor And as each player moves their piece, confident and tall |

I'm gonna have to agree with Taylor. I thought it would be something funny. But it held more meaning then what I expected. Great job on this. -Zach Wish I could find love.. But all I find these days are superficial fish in shallow waters. |

I, too, enjoyed it. I didn't want to offer any critique, but what I did want is to offer a poem by Pablo Neruda as a reply, because it contains and it amplifies something of the restrained feeling in this poem. It's his "Ode to My Socks," and it's translated by Robert Bly, whom you might also enjoy. In addition to "Ode to My Socks," you might also love Neruda's Twenty Love Songs and a Poem of Despair. Neruda, the Chilean Nobel Prize winner, wrote in Spanish. If you can read Spanish β and I, sadly, cannot β you may find your experience even more fun. If Not, Bly does a wonderful job; and W.S.Merwin, translates the book I mentioned. He won the Pulitzer, and his translation is superb. http://swellsknits.blogspot.com/2009/10/as-i-finished-this-sock-i-remembered.html |
