Staring beyond the hallow Awake, lying and listening Vacant sounds of a city asleep Envelop, surround and bring despair. Shadows creep across the sky Alone, walking the empty streets Companionship a lingering dream Memory, fantasy and soon dispersed. Clarity floods with the dawn Light, harsh pain to eyes and soul Curtain closes and I cry Huddled, fear felt in each tired breath. Beauty of a friend remembered Hope constrained by reality Saxophone wails into the grey Unmasked, pieces of soul fly free. Lethargic mind wants an end Body, flattened, fails to move Soul clinging to happier times Failure, brought by crushing weight. Thoughts turn dire with passing moments Darkness, found beneath quilt cover Soft harsh cries reveal the pain Release, shadow-life follows fleeting. Sunlight fails to awake the bleak Hurt, eyes tired beyond tears Life continues for a reason Sanity, thoughts cast to doubt. Sleeping dreams provide relief Happiness, alive between the hours Passing joy of full lives lived Waken, despair with sorrow return. Another sleepless night awaits Stories, romance read by lamplight Sustenance for a lonely soul Life, fictional, relieves the pain. Night beckons beyond the glass Blank, thoughts vanish with each step Lethargic cycles reign again Help, asked in written confusion. ------------------------ Beauty can be found in all places, even within the darkness of the soul. This is the first poem I have written in many years. As you can do doubt tell, I was in a deep depression. Being unable to explain how I felt in such a mood, when asked, for example by a psychologist, I decided to write a record. After a couple of attempts, I found I was unable to think in sentences, as I usually would. I have edited 'Lethargy Awaits' since then, but apart from two stanzas, once I accepted the form, it flowed out of me. So did the realisation that I needed to get help and when it was luckily offered later that day, could not refuse. Now, only a month later and in a much better situation and mood, I feel sufficiently distanced to be able to set free this poem. Beauty can be found in all places, even within the darkness of the soul. |

I love this poem. I can really relate to it, I slipped into a depression like this last summer, while I lost one of the most precious people to me that I had. It sounds odd, I know, but it was actually my dog. I'm one of those people who bond better with animals than people and it was like I was just a shell for a long time afterwards. You may have just started writing, but that was truly an amazing poem. Keep it up! |

thanks I don't find it at all odd, it's definitely much easier to talk to an animal and especially to give affection (or receive it). Beauty can be found in all places, even within the darkness of the soul. |

So glad things are going better for you now and welcome to PiP! In this excellent first post you've really captured what depression is like, the lethargy, sense of hopeless, etc. And these marvelous images from your poem sum it up so well: "Shadows creep across the sky" "Saxophone wails into the grey" |

Hi Ethernaut, First, thanks for responding to my poem. I love this one - it is like a stream of depressive consciousness...I totally relate! You express depression very well in this post as everyone has said - good title, too. Lethargy is the heart of depression. No energy, no drive, no nothing! Thank you. |
