Where no tyranny is tolerable

0 posted 2008-08-10 04:18 PM

I am not sure,
but it is almost certainly the case,
that the world was never
designed,
nor will it ever be designed,
for those who end up living in it,
and that we spend inordinate time fretting,
smoking, drinking and nail biting
over
things that can not be helped,
or in the neurotic pursuit of ideals
that do
not really exist.
even today I still feel
this tugging need to conform,
to be like others so
as to hide among them,
to get lost in anonymity,
to "escape" a pop culture
obsessed with what is
missing
or revolted by what is wrong,
and now and then I wish
I had or could
do things
that are manifestly impossible to have or do.
Like the Scarecrow, who sang
of all the things that he could do
if he only had a brain,
I am sometimes tempted to think
that others are better off than me,
and of all the things that I could do
if I could only HAVE, or BEE, like them.
and then I tell myself
this isn't true, that I am fine.
But that is one thought chasing another.

I am not sure, but it is almost certainly the case,
that it must be an art of sorts
to appear to jump the gap,
(and there will always be a gap)between what we are and have
and what life appears to require of us;
that I must hear though I can't hear,
and at least to some degree,
that I must see though I can't see;
that I must be better off and I am not, like others are.
And nights I think I'm too alone,
I try to imagine that I'm really not,
fantasize that I'm a part of you,
even though I'm really not ...
But that is just one thought
chasing another chasing another.
Still, it comforts me a little bit to fantasize
that you are here with me ...
to imagine that you live in me ...
even though you're really not.
And that is just one thought
chasing another chasing another ... ... ... ...

Jaime,

I think one of the reasons we are friends is because you are like no other.  There are plenty out there in this world who are like others, but to find one who is unique is a gift.  You are a gift.

You just do what you do because you do it really well.

Alison.
Actually I know that what you say is, in fact, true,
but little reminders like that mean the whole world to me, because what you are telling me is more than my thoughts chasing my thoughts chasing ...
Because I believe in your words now
because I will always believe in you ...
Wish I could say more than thank you.

Jaime, I echo the echoes above, and in addition, would like to say that God gives us only what we can handle, and I believe that the greatest burdens are given only to the strongest and most special people who can turn them around for the betterment of humanity and themselves.  And you are such a one.

By the way, scarecrows are immortalised in poetry and paintings and stories, besides being really appreciated by the people they serve.  How many people with only small burdens are?

"we spend inordinate time fretting,

This describes more than half the people I've ever known. (Thank God you are different.)
A profound write, amigo.

Thanks, Jaime, for your kind response.  It is my  pleasure to know you.  I admire you more than I know how to say.  I don't think I would be able to cope at all, least of all the way you do!
