Chico Mendes Brazilian environmental hero who gave his life 20 years ago to foster sustainable rubber tapping for Amazon indigents, to enable them to live within the mighty Amazon without raping her. Now precious land is again bartered away for more cattle pasture, leaving locals with nothing left to tap. ~will humans never learn?~ Sir Peter Blake Peter, your mainsail was well-trimmed in the final wind. Your mission of love for our Mother Earth, your final days, an adventure to protect the Amazon will not be forgotten by this world citizen, nor will the adventures of you and all the mates of your beloved ship the Seamaster. Sir Peter Blake was murdered Dec 6, 2001 on his ship the Seamaster, while in harbor on the Amazon River. The following is an exerpt from his final log: "The quality of water and the quality of life in all its infinite forms are critical parts of the overall ongoing health of this planet of ours, not just here in the Amazon, but everywhere. We want to restart people caring for the environment as it must be cared for. To win, you have to believe you can do it. You have to be passionate about it. You have to really "want" the result, even if this means years of work. The hardest part of any big project is to begin. We have begun, we are underway, we have a passion. We want to make a difference. Kind regards, Peter." ~will humans never learn the source of all life on planet earth is tied to the sanctity of land and water, and not to our self-serving short-term political/economic wants???~ *this is my annual holiday wish... that we learn to protect and defend the source of all being [This message has been edited by Midnitesun (12-22-2008 02:16 PM).] |

isn't it sad that animals do not treat each other or mother nature the way we do? |

Thanks friends, for reading my obviously non-poetry offering. But I find each year the state of affairs on Gaia seems to worsen, and it's usually because we humans are so self centered all we want is a utilitarian world that suits our needs, and to heck with the rest of life. Yet I continue to subscribe to the small skirtline of Hope. There are good people out there, who do what is right. |

Hi Mid, this is a very important poem that should be published in newspapers...I had the chance (without talking to him) to see Peter Blake in real, cause he won a sail race around the world from my town, I think that the people who assasinated him wouldn't have done it if they have known...The amazonian forest is a crucial point for the survival of the planet...I definitely endorse your tthoughts. Gosde bless you have a merry Christmas yann |

This is an important piece, Kacy. I share your concerns for our environment and hope that because of writers like you people will start to wake up before it's too late. Ida |

Thank you for this, Kacy! Human beings are capable of destroying anything and everything. Makes me sometimes wish not to be classified as one of them but I am and if there's such a thing as collective consciousness then I guess I'll have to take my fair share of responsibility. Take care! Helen |

Midnitesun - In my opinion I don't believe humans will ever learn until the rain forest is destroyed. Actually, they are doing a very good job of it. Never will they learn... BC |
