Brighter Days

I've been hoping for a brighter day
I've been skipping stones down the causeway
a crack in the wall of night
lets the sunshine come out and fight
I've been messing up in my own way

I know I've always let you down
I know I need to get out and paint this town
a break with procedure
lets me find a way back to her
I've been kicking up and throwing down

You said you needed some space
you said I've become such a sad disgrace
and I can't argue with you
but at least to you I was always true
you couldn't even tell it to my face
could you

I keep on hoping for a brighter day
I keep a piece of you to see me through okay
a song sung out of tune
but at least I wrote it for you
I know I have debts I've yet to repay
to you

You should know by now honey
I've no charms, no prospects, no money
but I need a way back to you
to you
and I'm bringing brighter days with me
with me

and I'll stop screwing up in my own way
but only
if you keep me from disarray
