I saw you wondering questions nearly loudly
but with your mouth closed
just volume in your eyes
about who she was and why
and did she know about you

and why did I smile when she spoke
about silly things you already knew
like it was the first time
she had ever seen a tree
or the sky when it was not blue

you undressed her more than I did
with your thoughts, looking for clues
and no I never did compare
her skin to other skin I had known
or her tattoos left by dreams

to others that didn't come true
but it seems you did in an instant
and your lower lip was always pretty
when it quivered just a little bit
before you covered it with smile

and pretended you were not from yesterday
