Lumpy oatmeal makes me crazy!

The Sugar Spoon

When I was just a little girl and had a crying day,
you know a  day of skinned knees or lost best friends.
A day of missing the school bus or being left behind;
one of those days that left me feeling lonely and lost.
You know what I mean?

When I had one of those days, my mother would let me cry,
then bring me pudding in a small bowl with the sugar spoon.
I remember when we were sick as children,
we got to snuggle Fifi, the stuffed French poodle.
My sister had plucked Fifi’s very long, French eyelashes
out, one by one, until the eye rims were bare.
Yet, Fifi was beautiful, coveted, and treasured.
When we were sad, and had that ‘life is too hard’ kind of day,
my Mother would bring soup, or pudding, or maybe ice cream
in a small bowl with the sugar spoon set to the side.

I have the sugar spoon now, and tonight?
Tonight, I have pudding in a small glass bowl
and the sugar spoon set to the side.
It’s small, silver and the healer of hurts
that brings me comfort on nights when life is too hard.

Everything tastes better and brings me comfort
when I eat it with the sugar spoon.

Alison, may your sugar spoon always be filled with the sweet pudding of life and may you forever be surrounded by Fifi friends and family.

Love to you, precious poetess!

Alison, Your mother was a wise woman. I can think of a few times I would have liked to have had Fifi and a sugar spoon.
Hope it brings you comfort.

Yo Alison,

I don't know how I missed this one.

It's very nice to have a memory that you can hold in your hand, and use.

Love Bobby
