Not So Old |

My last poem was a little depressing so I thought I had better give you a smile with this one. Not So Old An old man was travelling home on a train, He was lucky to get the last seat, For the train was packed at that time of day And to sit down was the ultimate treat. At the third or fourth stop a young lady stepped in But a seat she was unable to find, The heavy parcels she had , weighed her down rather bad And not one person there, tried to be kind. Now this old fellow, being the gent that he was, Gently tapped her then on her hand, He said, “I’m so sorry Miss, I can’t give up my seat, I’m much to old and decrepit to stand.” She smiled at him then, and said she’d be okay, She was resolved to the fact of no seat, But as the train rolled along, he could see something was wrong For she seemed to be out on her feet. Now she was a beauty, all willowy slim, With a figure that would gladden the glance, But not one fellow there would give up his seat, But I’m sure they all thought of romance. The train rattled on , on it’s homeward bound run And still there was no available seat, The old man then said, “my dear, you can sit on my lap, It will help ease the weight off your feet.” She looked at him then, with a shy tender smile And thanked him for being so kind, She said , “yes, it certainly would be a big help And I will, if you don’t really mind.” As she sat there, he looked at her hair, A sight that all men would acclaim, And her beautiful smile was like one long ago And it rekindled that flicker of flame. As his mind wandered back to the days of his youth, To the age when he was twenty and three, When he took his young wife, the pride of his life, But who was now just a fond memory. Her perfume was like heaven , all scented with spice And his blood pressure started to rise, Then he said, “quick young lady, please hop off my lap For I feel that I’ve been telling you lies.” She jumped to her feet, with concern on her face As she clutched at the parcels she’d bought, The old man stood up and said, “you have my seat For I’m just not as old as I thought.” Lindsay P Wilson |

Not only a great tale, but with the respects of chivalry built in. A wonderful read for me and now suddenly I feel much younger myself. Very well done. |

Thanks Janette, I'm so glad that you enjoyed the tale. That story is supposed to be true. It was written in Bert Facey's autobiography when he was a conductor on a tram in Perth. It was a story that I turned into a poem. Mark I'm so glad you felt younger after reading the poem my friend. It's marvellous what a lovely young blonde can do for your thinking and memory. Thanks heaps for taking the time to comment. Lindsay |
