I often looked at the ground from angles
while leaning against your back
and listing to your voice water
knowing your perfume too often
when someone else wore it pretending

but I knew they were not you
even when I touched you through them
and heard your soul make that music
like our hands did holding
just the moments between us

I oiled our footprints in the sand
so if I reused them on occasion
it wouldn't wake you
each time I passed and waited
with my arm extended for yours

in case there was something we never said
