"Winter"

Winter lies around the bend, its chill is in the air
Its frigid fingers change the breeze from summer to despair
An icy touch has turned the leaves from green to shades of dark
The once-blue sky has lost its hue, and gone from bright to stark

The scent of frost has overcome the scent of summer grass
The surface of the lake is grey and still as mirrored glass
And birds sing in the morn no more, but those that choose to stay
To face the frigid winter, now just days or weeks away

A festive atmosphere descends, a candle in the night,
The streets will soon be lined in wreaths and strings of Christmas lights
And voices raised in joyful song will pierce the gloomy cold
While snow like ash will fill the air as winter takes its hold

Try as I might to be morose (which seems to be the norm)
I wait with anxious eagerness for winter’s icy storm
To cloak the town I love so well in sheets of snowy white
So I can roam the wintry streets, my clandestine delight!

"My candle burns at both ends; it will not last the night; but ah, my foes, and oh, my friends--it gives a lovely light!"  -Edna St. Vincent Millay

Makes me long for your kind of winter, Timothy. We just have rain here in So. Cal.
but I lived in Oregon and Idaho as a child
and remember the winters of your poem.

Arius Miura de Galdri,

You bring many thoughts of the winter that is surely to come soon. And you describe it well. Must be cold there in Michigan during the winter season... Nice write...

Timothy,

I love winter too and can't wait for the trees to be covered with thick hoar frost.

I always enjoy your poetry.

Nice rhyming, it doesn't feel forced, but think it might sound better 'a chill' rather than 'its' which begins the next line. Just MHO.
I enjoyed the imagery very much.
