We all know Spider's have tales (not tails).
This tale is from
the human POV,
clearly not the spider's.

Deke never let anyone clean his office
of the intricate layers of webs,
considered spiders affectionately
as his eight legged business partners.
Deke was oft called
the father of the beneficial insects business.
That's right, people are paid to raise those things.
Deke's beneficial insectary business
(Rincon Vitova Insectary, California)
did not commercially rear spiders.
While working alongside several entomologists,
we reared parasitized fly larvae
(for fly control)
and Chrysopa carnea, to produce
the lovely green lacewing larvae
that greedily devours aphids.
Mentioning the fly pupae
brings me to another tale,
not about spiders.
But that one can wait...
the spider's tale must come first!

While Deke was away on a farm field trip
assisting a sustainable/organic farmer,
his wife decided it was time
to tidy up his messy office.
Books and periodicals were scattered everywhere,
bug specimens and dirty coffee mugs
sat side-by-side on overflowing bookshelves.
Mrs. Dietrich instructed me to use the vacuum
and get rid of the numerous unsightly spider webs.
I protested,
remembering hours of conversations
hearing his terms of endearment for such creatures.
But she simply stated:
"He knows he can't keep them at home, either"
So the vacuum began it's business
of sucking up miles of webs,
as scared spiders scurried
for cover in cracks and crevices.
Needless to say
Deke was enraged when he returned,
and laid down a new rule:
NO vacuum cleaners allowed
in his private office!!!
Within a week the office
was a teeming maze of webbery,
and Deke was again chuckling heartily
telling new spider tales.

Let's leave it here for now, OK?
The fly tales can wait
for their own center-stage.

Eeek!  No Deke allowed in my home!  I guess there's many of us who wouldn't want to set foot in his private office either but thank goodness for "differences" otherwise the world would be a boring place.

Thanks for this, Kacy!

Glad you enjoyed the story, Helen. Spiders were never at the top of my pet list either.
I was definitely inspired by your spider story!

Thanks for reading a creature feature, Bruce.

Ethel? How nice to have a visit from you. Where have you been hiding????

Yo Kacy,

This is a nice poem.  Spiders are not insects.  They have eight legs, and are related to the octopus.

Never hurt a spider, they are valuable friends to man.  They eat flies.

Black Widows and Brown Recluse Spiders are of course dangerous to man.  They should be avoided.

Love Bobby

LOL, yes, spiders are arachnids, not insects.
We didn't rear spiders. They lived like Kings and Queens at RVI, except for that one incident.
Thanks for reading!

I understood what Deke must have felt.  I love spiders and I hate destroying spider webs.  I never destroy ones in my garden and do my best not to walk into them.  When I destroy a web in my house and try to carry the spider, out the door or through a window, without hurting the spider, I always tell the spider that I really am sorry, but I don't know if they believe me, or if it matters to them whether I am sorry or not.  I would like them to know that I really am.

I have a spider poem too.  I will post it.  I am not sure whether it will be a repost or not.

Wow, another spider story. Great, I love it, dear Kacy!

And Deke would love to hear that my daughter also forbade us to dust a certain part of the windowsill of her room, because there she had a spider family, which she loved to observe (very small ones fortunately!).

Love,
Margherita

Thanks, Kacy for singing along to my spider song.

Margherita please thank your daughter for saving her little spider family - and you for complying!
