Pennies = Snowball Pennies, a treat from uncles or aunts (never Grandma) when you’re very young a big deal, seeking a shining on sidewalks see a penny pick it up all the day you’ll have good luck penny loafers mindless ramblings bought cheap penny for your thoughts weighty use, in for a penny, in for a pound... pennywise, pound foolish penny ante card games taught integrity though too soon someone’s penniless penny line writers, hacked away pinching pennies knew a walking, talking Penny… our childish fingers learning how to flip a coin, then catch, slap heads you win wishes on a penny, how many have come true perhaps the one I made for you plink into a fountain's well no pennies from the Tooth Fairy report cards rate nickels, dimes, quarters sometimes sprinkled in bottoms of Christmas stockings or plastic Easter eggs molded in machines for odd shapes two quarters, pay up safer system now, but was free when one utilized train tracks and locomotives swimming lessons promised diving, bring your pennies to learn how to hold breath open eyes dive dive and play the pickup game Lincoln looks younger with each new batch tins, boxes, bottles, 3# coffee cans and drawers collect them, multiplying, multiplication tables and math sheets show brown dots, but the buffalo disappeared from the nickel penny postcards antiquated by time as my feet still feel floorboards creaking while reaching for penny candy from jars of rainbows medicinally inclined, pennies, sure cure for ringworm only after soaking a handful in vinegar a full day then night applying with cotton to ringworm sores [ow ow ow] brother still had to have his head shaved while I got off easy…though my white kitten died. I finger pennies and remember Snowball… ~*~ (c) 7-16-01 " It matters not this distance now " Excerpt, Yesterday's Love |

Aw, poor Snowball! I still pick up pennies! They eventually grow up to become dollars. A keeper of a write, lady Sunshine. |

I like the free associative style of this. I know some folks prefer their poets and poems more tightly bound, but I happen to think it's that stray ray of Sunshine that is most surprising, and appreciated. |

Kacy, but of course you still pick up pennies! You're midnitesun...and you adore reflection...especially when it has connection! Shirtless, thank you very much for spending a moment in mine... James...we share so much...it's probably due to age... serenity, m'love...you've given so much; this was first posted before we really knew each other as sisters...this stray ray of sun cannot thank you enough for all you've given her... garapan...we didn't veer much on Snowball, did we? But...you caught her wonderful, momentful essence. For that, I thank you. |

That brought back so many memories Sunshine We used to buy penny ice creams and penny ice blocks but that was so long ago. My Dad used to tell us that if we looked after our pennies the pounds would look after themselves. Great write. Lindsay |

Love your stroll down the penny mile! I had them too in my youth all the way over here in sunny South Africa so thanks for the memories. Helen |

I truly liked this little essay on pennies. And I am old enough to remeber when a penny bought a delightful treat at the candy counter in our country store. Joyce |

Great memories...I still stop to pick up a penny off the street... and I was trying to think what the title "...Snowball" had to do with the poem until the very end... M |

Thank you, amusemi, for reading! Lindsay, it never really matters how old we get, when we can still smile, yes? Honeybunch, I think I almost expected you to say Penny Lane rather than penny mile. So glad to see you here...thank you! Joyce, I'm old enough, too...but they were disappearing by the time I arrived on the scene. I was small enough that my uncles had to lift me up to the counter! Maureen...glad you kept reading. You see, a long time ago pets were not vaccinnated like they are today, and young pets, especially cats, were highly susceptible to things like ringworm, which is contagious to humans as well. Well, this disease killed my cat, and the treatment for human outbreak was just as described in the poem, way back then...put copper pennies in vinegar and let sit for 24 hours, then start dabbing onto the round ring-like sores to dry them out and clear them up. Stung like the devil. I was lucky, and didn't have any outbreaks on my head - but my brother wasn't so lucky... a long time ago poem, it still brings back fond memories of the little kitten we named Snowball... |
