I love sport
But I keep it locked inside.
I'm not silly about it
I know that there's more important things
Like global warming, terroism
And all the worrying that that brings.
But I suppose you reach a point
When you feel you've done everything that you can really do
There's no-one left who you can sue
So we end up devoting so much of our time
Our very body and soul
To an obsession which come match day,
Awards itself parole
Our sport.

Sport triggers feelings that we no longer know how to control
If you're at a dinner party with
A solicitor,
Someone on the dole,
An IT technician
And a girl that dances around a pole
And incommunicado is abound
It's sport that lets us fill that hole
And find some common ground.

Ladies, gents, fill your glasses!
Here's to the 21st century lower-middle classes.

It's undoubtably quite shallow
Not like Mozart tinkering
On his piano.

Unfulfilling
Unlike Alex Fleming and
His penicillin or
MichaelAngelo doodling on the ceiling

But,
If you win or if you lose
If you choose blues
Or reds
There will be moments when you feel
Sport is the only thing that's really real.

Because we don't need to worry anymore
About boiling oil ready,
To pour upon invaders as
They're scaling up the castle walls.
We worry about congestion charges
And wether or not
We're eating enough
In the way of vegetables,
And sport.

Simon, you really are so good, I am beginning to hate you....I would have a contract taken out on you but you would probably ending up selling the photo rights to Hello! and opening an exclusive cafe' in Philly, marrying Sally & having Felix as Maitre' D. Which in turn would lead to a syndicated US show which toppled Ramsay off the ratings and you being on the Tonight show.....I think I should go to bed now, I'm starting to hallucinate.. Oh I forgot why I started this... I hate football & all sport unless it is about cars or bikes ( with engines) I never could get my head around it,  just too confusing offside, LBW all that malarkey & the names... East Fife, Aberdeen, Forfar....Then what about the half time scores?  East Fife : 5 -  Forfar, so far 4 ...    'night ,'night...

I am still laughing about the comment above...but must say I enjoyed the read. And how right you are (the closet sport fanatic I am) even when I don't always know who's playing the game...I love to cheer anyways!

I would rather my words fall upon deaf ears than a closed mind...

Simon,

You have done a good job on this.  I spend a lot of time watching baseball in the summer, and football in the winter.

BTW, Felix says--"Yo, Simon, keep yer mitts off Sally if ya knows whats good fer ya.  Sally's my girl.

Love Felix"

Don't listen to John, he's a trouble-maker.

Hello Simon, I'm missed this one and I'm glad it appears again, I love the modesty of you in this poem, I love the importance of sport as a noble challenge with the human condition, I love the way you talk about genius and consider ourselves....

  Have a nice day
