Stark shadows dance upon crisp crunchy snow, as tree-silhouettes mark time and space while Sassy Squirrel devours leftover popcorn tossed 'neath a backyard tree. She looks at the window, aware I am watching her fill her mommy-belly. Sassy has been pulling tail hairs for her nest in a nearby tree, anticipating baby sassies. By the time night shadows all, three corn cobs on a stick are set to stand in front of the patio door, Sunday fare for Miss Sassy. Out in front a new resident hawk sits patiently in the naked cherry tree, stalking smaller birds who scurry from bush to feeder then back again to shelter in the dense hedge row. I ask the hawk to be swift, not make his prey suffer needlessly, knowing each species must eat to survive. Such is the way of all Life. |

Suburban wildlife Kacy..what a sassy squirrel she is too? I do hope that the hawk is not big enough for larger creatures? Otherwise the Sassy story sadly ends? And such a pity? This could be a new form of poetry? Serial animal poetry on the goings on of our domestic wild creatures? I can see it now? Sassy Squirrel...Dave the deer..Brock the Badger...Harry the hawk..Wiley the Coyote?..etc..LOL Enjoyed this read of domestic wildlife, told with a real eye for detail.. Thank you Kacy.. Goldenrose. Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky, ring out the old, ring in the new, ring out the false, ring in the true..A Lord Tennyson |

Miss Sassy is lucky to be cared for by Kacy! This is beautiful, even though the end holds a bitter truth... yes each species must survive, but it always tears my heart apart! I so love your wildlife poetic reports. love Margherita |

My dear lady, a very beautiful poem. But I am knocking at my mind " do you read as a natural one?" My mind did not open the door for me. Beautiful one either for nature or for politics . |

Phil, it's a very small hawk, but fast, so one can only guess what small prey will lose the game. I've often wondered if setting out bird feeders might violate the natural order of things, yet because we humans constantly disrupt the natural eco-systems and habitats of other creatures, I find offering them additional sustenance acceptable. But I must admit, it's never much fun to witness the food chain in progress. |

Maybe 'Sassy-squirrel' is 'pulling hairs' also just at the thought of being a new mother...and/or because the 'old boy' isn't around helping out with nest building; etc.?! Isn't it true though, that only the human animal (the most dangerous and deadly predator) kills for many reasons in addition to basal survival? applause for your effective observations of the fine minutia of Nature's ways... |

I understand the way nature works but I don't like seeing it in action. When I was little we lived in Salem, Oregon just on the edge of the forest. The hawks were always after the chickens and one of my jobs was to chase away the hawks by waving a towel at them. Your poem brought back memories. Ida |

Such is the cycle....life, birth, death. I'm with you on the request to Mr. Hawk. Hope Sassy brings you many more stories. Enjoyed this one, Kacy. *hugs*......jo |

This is a fine write, MidniteSun! Wait until Sassy Squirrel brings the children by for lunch. They're mighty cute when they're little. Sometimes they get sleepy halfway through their meal and have to take a nap. I admire your eye for the big picture and the close-ups, and your writing always leaves me wishing for more. |

Kacy, I loved this poem. I like to watch the squirrels and birds out of the window. Those babies are going to be so cute when they start helping their Mom go for their food. It was good to read you again. Powered by CGISpy.com |
