Those eyes! |

Those eyes The green light made me impatiently hurry along, but I slowed down when I saw him as he struggled across the street carrying a load of cartons … his bed and his sheets? No, I didn’t want to look! But those eyes shouted at me … no! Time stopped while his glance stuffed my mind with misery. “I could go back and buy him some chicken and potatoes … plastic fork and knife included, ask him if he needed something, give him some money… help him carry his heavy load of desolation …. !” No, I didn’t look back! But those eyes haunted me, while I drove home, comfortably within my car, trying to shut out the bitter taste of reality. I yawned a prayer for all those like him … “maybe he was really hungry … but no there are canteens organized by Caritas, they also keep them clean … and even offer real beds, why should I worry so much?” The night was cold I thought. “I want to sleep in peace, have some nice dreams…. will he shiver within his cartons? Will he ponder his destiny? Or will he just faint into the night? There are some nuns nearby, they have a nice clean church with warm wooden benches, bored by their shiny spotlessness … maybe they will open their doors? Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of death. Amen. Amen!” [This message has been edited by Margherita (02-16-2008 08:57 AM).] |

Thank you D. for the warm reply! Thank you John for your appreciative words. Thank you Tom too. It is a sad situation. There are many homeless people and beggars. It is impossible to help all and some also are just victims of others (there seem to exist mafia organizations of beggars!). So I have "my" Egyptian car window washer, but have to say no to all the others. So I have "my" homeless old man ... "my" gipsy woman outside the supermarket ... But of course these are only drops on a hot stone! Thank you again. love Margherita |

Margherita, This is a great poem, and thanks for the Hail Mary. Many Churches around here don't lock their doors. I've slept in one years ago. Bobby |

Margherita, my dear compassionate friend, I felt this to my very core. I, too, have extended my hand, heart, and coin to help the homeless in our area. But as you wrote in one of your replies, "these are only drops on a hot stone!" However, if we were all to reach out and lend a helping hand ~ to even one person in need, those drops would become an ocean of compassion and love that could have great impact on the plight of the homeless in our communities. Donating blankets and old furniture to shelters for the homeless ~ donating food to food banks ~ volunteering your services and donating money to programs to help those in need ~ Every little "drop" helps! AS EA says, every little bit helps...and if we really think about it, so many of us (generic) are probably a paycheck or few from being homeless. M |

I know this feeling well, Margherita. We have beggars on every corner and although we feel for them here we never know if they have a smash in grab or something worse in mind. Once again the majority spoil it for the few. I give every day to the "car guards" although one knows they are incapable of stopping theft. You wrote it well and thank you. Helen |

Thank you dear Simon, Bobby, Linda, Maureen and Helen for your heartwarming replies. Yes, we have to consider that even a little help can make a difference. And we shall listen to our hearts to be guided in helping the right ones! Thank you! love to all Margherita |

Sadly, a global problem - too bad we all can't work together to find the answers. Our world leaders are too busy sorting power issues, I guess. I feel your words and heart .. and I guess we just keep doing what we can. xoxoxo Ali |

Dear Margherita, I suspect we all have found ourselves in similar circumstances at one time or another in our walk through life, wondering if we should stop and help or what to do and then regretting not doing it. Discernment is a true art...will our help truly help or will it perpetuate a bad situation.....would we be better off to donate or volunteer to/with places equipped to properly care for the homeless or help directly? I don't have the answers either. May the All that is All forgive us All for not having the answers and help us find some. And may the All that is All be merciful to those in need. *hugs*........jo |
