The Plight We are In |

The Plight We’re In If you want to know about the plight we’re in Just take a good hard look at yourself, Honesty & respect seems to fall by the way And discipline has been put up on the shelf. A concerned student wrote a letter to God And asked why he hadn’t stopped the murder in schools, She listed twenty-one schools across the whole USA Where murder & mayhem now seemed the rule. She then signed herself –(a concerned student) As she thought of those students now under the sod She waited anxiously for the answer to come back, The reply, I’m no longer allowed in schools, Signed God. They say it was started by Madeline Murray O’Hare, She no longer wanted any prayers in their schools, We were also complicit & we too made the change, When we should have stuck by our own golden rules. Someone then said don’t read the bible in school And just forget about the laws it dictates, Thou shalt not kill, steal or commit adultery, And love your neighbour is the message it states. Dr Benjamin Spock said we shouldn’t spank our children when they put on a tantrum & scream, Because their little personalities might suffer And we may damage their low self- esteem. And we said an expert should certainly know Of child behaviour & what he is talking about, So we decided not to spank the kids anymore And hope it would work tho’ there was a doubt. Then someone said that teachers & principles Must not discipline children with a bad attitude, Because we don’t want any bad publicity And we certainly don’t want to be sued. And sadly we accepted their reasoning The entertainment industry said lets make TV shows To promote profanity, violence & illicit sex schemes, Lets also record music that encourages pack rape, Drugs, murder, suicide & bizarre satanic themes. And we said it’s only entertainment with no adverse effect And no one takes it seriously anyway, So go right ahead & produce whatever you like, It seems that no one was thinking of Judgment Day. Now we are asking ourselves why our kids Have no conscience & don’t know right from wrong, And why it doesn’t bother them to kill strangers, Classmates & others that make up the throng. Undoubtedly if we really thought hard about it, We’d find it was something that we already know I’m sure it has a great deal to do with the fact That we all only reap just what we sow. If you don’t take the time to think about this And the widening encroachment of sin, Then don’t sit down & bitterly complain About the terrible state the whole world is in. Lindsay P Wilson |

'Tis no wonder to me that all 5 of your children are fine, out-standing adults! They learned from the best. ~ what your own find dad passed on to you! And look what you're still doing?!? Passing it on to others through your sage, no-nonsense, caring poetry! You're like a mortal Ayer's Rock! Nodding with what you were saying ~ and shaking my head at the unfortunate truth of it all. Love to you, Linda |

Very interesting, Lindsay. You can't imagine just how true your words are. I worked in the schools for 30 years and in my opinion the ruin of education began with the idea of "self-esteem." Ida |

I Love The Rain, well I do too, the only trouble is is that we are not getting very much of it over these last ten years but we live in hope. Thank you so much for your kind response, much appreciated. My dear Linda, you always say the nicest things and I sincerely thank you for that. I am very fortunate in having a great family, who all have good jobs or run their own businesses. But the most wonderful thing is that they all keep in touch with us every week. But there again from what I read between the lines, you have a wonderful family as well. Just what I'd expect from a mother like you. A big hug my dear and love to you. Ida my dear, how can you still write such great posts after teaching kids for thirty years. It is a wonder you are still sane and I commend you for that. You probably know a lot better than me the problems of youth today. You must be a very strong lady. Keep up your great writing Ida and God Bless. Love to you. Lindsay |

Dear Lindsay, what a magnificent voice you are, and a much needed one at that. Thank you for this write of reason and concern. Yes, the future is looking more bleak than hopeful every day... sigh. You are a very fine and wise man. I hope your dear Australia gets some rain soon. We're going through quite the dry spell too, here in Cali. Best Regards, Rich |

Very wise thoughts...I don't want to say more cause my opinions are mixed...The free will is a preponderous act...The idea of good and bad is really something objective...There would be so many things to say that I stop right now... Ihank you for sharing. yann |

Dear Lindsay, you have done a great job with this one. In my opinion, to obtain results we need not go back to old schemes of education, but we need to awaken to LOVE, which does not mean to loosen the reins, but to be a living example in teaching respect and love. But for many parents and educators it just means to let them have their way without caring. So there is no ideal to cling to, no ethic reference point, only the uncensored showering of violence and anarchy from the mass medias. It's a serious, very serious problem. Thank you dear friend for this. Love, Margherita |

Well written, but there's one flaw in your reasoning. Why is it schools should be responsible for teaching morality to students whose parents have not? Moreover, many of those parents who have failed to impart a sense of values to their children were educated, you guessed it, in schools before the supposed "eviction of god". Personally, I would have withdrawn my child from any school that proposed to teach him a set of values besides the ones I intended for him. That's my job, not theirs. |

LindsayP, Bible thumping is always a nice safe subject. There must be money in it. BTW,the murder rate in the USA, and here in Philadelphia has been going down for a number of years. It all depends on economics. Bobby [This message has been edited by Robert E. Jordan (07-05-2008 08:34 PM).] |

Dear Lindsay, I missed this the first time around, but I printed it this time. I have some friends that I would like to share it with if I may. You touch on so many things that I believe in. I did not grow up in a family that prayed or practised formal religion, but my parents never objected that we were exposed to it. If nothing else, they figured it was part of our educational experience. They believed it was their job to teach their beliefs at home, and allow us to learn of other's beliefs out in the big world of school and at friend's houses. We were spanked when we deserved it - our mouths were washed out with soap when we backtalked my Mom. My father was mentally ill - so I had two childhoods. I had the one of being the daughter of a rational father who raised us to know right from wrong and to inquire and learn. That is the father I am thinking of now as I read your poem. We lived in a very remote environment with limited television and such - but we read a great deal and listened to music lots. My father bought me my first rock album, but I also listened to opera, bag pipes, broadway tunes, etc. I think these things made my siblings and me the people we are today. We all have problems, but we all know that we can find our solutions. I kind of am rambling here, but your poem brought these thoughts to mind. Love, Alison |

To Richy, Garapan, James, Islander,Margherita, Scoff, Bobby, And Alison, thank you kind folks for taking the time and effort to respond. Everyone has a right to their own opinion And I certainly don't expect that everyone will agree with what I write. I do feel rather flattered though by a lot of the kind responses, I'm quite sure I don't deserve them but they are very much appreciated. Have a great day folks and God Bless you all Lindsay |
