You'll Be Sorry You’ll be sorry, said the stern old judge To the young fellow that stood in the dock, If you keep following that pathway of crime, It will soon be too late to turn back the clock. You’ve been up here before me three times before And I have always given you a chance to redeem, You are a silly young fellow according to law And your language to say the least is extreme. Assaulting the elderly is a deplorable act And made worse when you decided to steal, Abusing your elders shows no semblance of tact, I know just how those old people must feel. I’ve decided to give you just one single chance more And I hope that this time you’ll see the light, A job and a paycheck will your ego restore And to your parents it will bring great delight. The young fellow heaved a great sigh of relief And thanked the judge for showing compassion, He promised to renounce his days as a thief, He said his father had already given him a thrashin’. Dad said that it was through the friends that he had And that he followed their undesirable ways, In essence he said, the boy’s not really bad But from that narrow path he’s been liable to stray. Twelve months slipped away, the future looked bright Until one night the boys filled up with beer, Throwing caution to the wind their drunken urge to ignite, They then robbed a shop but cops were very quick to appear. The other youths escaped but his run was too late And the police arrested him there on the spot, He realized straight away that he’d sealed his own fate And that he deserved whatever sentence he got. He came up before the same Judge in the court, Who looked down on him now as a quarry, He said, ‘I tried to help you when danger was fraught And that if you re-offended, I said you’d be sorry. Hello, my dear Lindsay! This should be posted in high schools as a deterrent and as a reminder of the consequences of aberrant behaviour! Crime doesn't pay! ~ and it can have a life-long deleterious effect not only on the perpetrator, but on the victim, as well! A sad story about a far-too-common scenario! Well told! Love to you! Dear Lindsay, thank you for this highly significant write. You really have a way of bringing across a message! There is such a growth of criminality and the worst acts are surely those against old people. It is a complex problem, no doubt. Social injustices and gaps between poor and rich are also responsible for such acts and an overall loss of respect for others. There is much work to do! And prisons do not offer enough reeducation. Prisons become playground for new criminal projects. But no doubt there are many who are aware of this and are trying to improve the system. This was very thought provoking. Thank you again. My dear Margherita thank you for your reply I honestly believe that the greatest problem in society today is the lack of discipline from parents who fail to teach their children manners, and respect for other people and their property. The fact that parents and teachers are not allowed to slap their children for misdemeanors is completely ridiculous. It says in the Bible that to spare the rod is to spoil the child, and as far as I'm concerned, truer words were never spoken. Society only has itself to blame for the predicament we are in, for without discipline chaos takes over. A big hug to you dear Ida and take care. Lindsay |
