               Over The Hill

It seems so many years ago that I started on life’s path
And it really hasn’t been so bad as I look back in aftermath,
As a youth I climbed a mountain and struggled on until
I reached the mountain’s summit, where I found it just a hill.

My father always said to me to think before I spoke
And when I’d decided what to do, to make sure I filled the yoke,
When you decide to begin a task, don’t half way start to stall,
Do the job as if you meant it or don’t do it at all.

How many times he said that to me is really hard to say
But it’s a rule I’ve always followed and I still follow it today,
He always set the standard high, a pathway hard to fill,
And he never veered from that path until he passed o’er the hill.

The way that it has helped me I would like to now express
For it’s the lessons learned when young that helps in life’s success,
Be honest in all things you do so you can hold your head up high,
You’ll find the dividends that it will pay will not pass you by.

One of the major factors that’s been a boon through life
When I succumbed to a maiden’s charms and took her as my wife,
Life has been a partnership though at times the roads been rough
But it’s the ability to pull together when the going’s getting tough.

To raise five wonderful children is an achievement great of course,
A blessing without equal, I’m sure all parents will endorse,
To give them a good education and show them what was right,
To teach them what my father taught  & keep the truth in sight.

I was probably nearing forty when I finally reached the top
And it was o’er the next twenty years that I hoped to reap the crop,
I think the secret is a balance between life’s work and play
And to save a little on the side to use on a rainy day.

It took about twenty years or so before the slope would change,
I had to negotiate a down hill grade and my future rearrange,
Although my faculties are still intact, at least I hope they are,
For hope faith and perseverance has been like a guiding star.

Then one day it suddenly dawned that old age was the enemy,
Time has passed on the downhill run & I was not the man I used to be,
My youthful hope I could no longer grope or my cup of youth refill,
I knew at last that good health was past and that I was over the hill.

I guess we're just going to have to stay "over the hill," Lindsay, because I don't know about you, but there's no way I can climb back up. Perhaps we'll just have to be satisfied that we did the best we could.

Hi Lindsay, your father should be a great man,

My father always said to me to think before I spoke
And when I’d decided what to do, to make sure I filled the yoke,
When you decide to begin a task, don’t half way start to stall,
Do the job as if you meant it or don’t do it at all.

What a life lesson this is. Hands to my forehead, Nice write. Prasad

Lindsay, that sounds like my father that you were writing about! Did we have the same father? ~ are you my brother?!? LOL

I can see that the proverbial apple did not fall far from the tree ~ and then you went on to pass your Dad's teachings on to your own youngin's!

"Although my faculties are still intact, at least I hope they are,
For hope faith and perseverance has been like a guiding star."

~ May I be as fortunate to still have my faculties as in tact as yours are! ~ Heck, even at my age!

~ and yes, "hope, faith, and perseverance" will continue to get you far. You may be on the downward slope, but may it be very loooong and easy one with may more pleasant experiences yet to be lived!

Love you, Aussie Man!

Ida my dear, every stage in life has its own special advantages, it's only a matter of knowing how to appreciate them. Although I'm on the downward slope I still enjoy life to the fullest and still do two volunteer jobs in my wheel chair. Having a wonderful wife does certainly help. Thank you so much, love and hugs.

Prasad, yes I did have a wonderful father
but sorry to say that I didn't realise it fully until he had passed on. But I am thankful that a lot of his good advice I was able to pass on to my children,Thanks for your kind response.

Linda, you are always so sweet with your response and today is no exception. I'd love to call you my half sister as I couldn't pick a better one if I tried. They say the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree
Well what a wonderful tree you must have fallen from to be the kind generous person you are. Love you Linda and thanks.

James, your kind response is always appreciated for it's poets like you who make writing poetry such a pleasure. Thank you my friend and take care.

Lindsay

Dear Lindsay, take a bow for your achievements and for the poetic rendering of your reflections about life and your loved ones. You have such a beautiful heart and your wisdom is ever present.

Your words reminded me of the wonderful song "I'll soon be over the hill" with the incredibly moving voice of Mahalia Jackson. But as you say every age has its own beauty and worth and as long as there is love to share life is perfect.

Love,
Margherita

You leave a deep impression upon me with your writing.  As I am experiencing a lot of your past writing for the first time, this is your prime for me.
