Glowing Fairies

I wonder why fireflies don't glow
As they did in the long ago
On summer evenings on the prairies.
I'd chase them saying they were fairies.

I never caught a firefly
They were not there, I don't know why
When I sought to catch them in my hand.
And I could never understand
Where they had gone, those flashing fairies
So long ago on virgin prairies.

It has been many years since I
Have seen fairies or fireflies flitting by.
Perhaps fairy queens and glowing flies
Don't show their selves to aged eyes.
