Glowing Fairies I wonder why fireflies don't glow As they did in the long ago On summer evenings on the prairies. I'd chase them saying they were fairies. I never caught a firefly They were not there, I don't know why When I sought to catch them in my hand. And I could never understand Where they had gone, those flashing fairies So long ago on virgin prairies. It has been many years since I Have seen fairies or fireflies flitting by. Perhaps fairy queens and glowing flies Don't show their selves to aged eyes. Byu: Joyce Johnson 6/22/08 |

This is lovely, dear Joyce. Pollution is the cause for the diminishing of "glowing fairies". In some areas here they have been seen again and this was such important news that the newspapers announced it. May you see them again soon. Smiling at Tina's reply! Love, Margherita |

There seems to be fewer of so many things now, Joyce. Butterflies for example, I don't see nearly so many of them as I did when I was younger. I think Margharita is right. Lovely poem on the subject. Ida |

Your poem reminded me of when I was a teenager hitchhiking at night on a dark road. I caught fireflies and rubbed their phosphorescence on my thumb. I guess I thought it would help me get a ride -- it didn't. When I thought about it sensibly, I realized that not too many people would stop for someone whose thumb glows. Thanks for the poem. I thought you might be a Robert Frost fan. The last lines of your poem had a Robert Frost sentiment. There are two podcasts about Robert Frost poems on my website. The link is at the bottom of this post. Click poetry podcast at the top or bottom of my homepage, then scroll down the podcast page and click on the Robert Frost pictures to get to the audio player. My kids still get to chase fireflies on the prairie! Rural living at it's best, I guess! Truly, this is just beautiful. I love the way you write. |

PS - sorry, I just had a thought. We live across from cornfields and I love to see the lights swaying in and out of the stalks. |
