Understanding Big Words |

“Big words,” she said. I looked at her wondering what she was really saying. “You use too big of words, the average person won’t understand.” I shook my head. “Are you saying I am pretentious?” I asked She smiled my smile. On a bad day, I wonder What it is about me That makes parts of my life so difficult Yet others fit so perfectly On a sad day, I concede The reality of me Taking what I can now Trying not to dwell on what I can’t See, grasp or be “You and your brothers know what those words mean,” I continued with a bit of a smug grin, hiding just below the surface. “We are your children,” said she, my daughter beautiful. “Others don’t want the big words in their music, the radio will never play it.” I grinned then. It was never my intention to have it played. She didn’t understand writing if it weren’t going to be viewed like a trophy. I have displayed too many parts of myself over the years. Most often not garnering what I needed from those displays. Aching even when the connection is only slight, rejection feels the same whether you care a little or more. On a good day, I am and that is more than okay For what I have What I had And what I will display “I’m just saying, the words are too big,” she repeated. “Maybe that one was just for me,” I ached. I spoke with "big" words to my daughters right from the get-go ~ and their teachers were always impressed with their vocabularies. My one daughter fell in love with the English language and has a Master's degree in the subject. Your daughter is, unfortunately to my way of thinking, correct in her assessment. Many young people want quick, easy, and expedient ways of communicating. Enjoyed this little expose on differing points of view! I now leave you with one of my favourite "big words" ~ antidisestablishmentarianism Lover of Language, Linda |

Susan, There is so much in here that made me smile. Pretentious, indeed! I think big words are to savor - and nothing rolls of the tongue than words with multi-syllables. Alison |

Well now, after spending time in the dictionary, I think I finally understand what you were saying... In reality, loved this..., the way it holds you, touches and lingers... still. j. |

Thank you all. I enjoyed doing this one as it both made me sad and made me smile. But the reason for smile is all that is seen by the naked eye. "too bad ignorance isn't painful" |
