Dear Diana, reading your fervent evolution prayer induced me to check "Vervet monkeys" and what I found is very interesting, but also makes me sad. It's a difficult situation for both parts, humans and monkeys, especially when both sides have to fight for food. This said, I agree wholeheartedly with you that humanity should learn also from the animal reign and refrain from killing and hurting each other. Thanks Margherita. The information you found is very good, but "heavy annual slaughter" is a bit strong. Certainly there are some that are killed (and one is one too many) and that is abominable and people need to be educated about them - not cutting down forests, not putting out food for them or hand-feeding them, etc. I have a troop (well, I think it is the same troop) that visits my indigenous garden forest about once a week. They spend anything from half an hour to a couple of hours and have a wonderful time feeding (I don't put out food for them, they feed on the leaves, flowers and fruits) from the trees and jumping from tree to tree. The most fun (for both them and me) is when they bounce on the branches especially on my verandah. The babies are particularly adorable and many times I have my heart in my mouth afraid that they will fall. I suppose it could happen, but in all the years since I have had my forest, it hasn't happened - well, to my knowledge anyway. The babies are extremely well-behaved, and if one oversteps the mark by just a little, an adult - not always the mother - corrects them and they behave in an exemplary manner again. - Owl |

There is much to learn from their kingdom indeed. This is so simply expressed yet so profound. |

Thanks to your poem I now know all about Vervet Monkeys. One of the best things about the site is the things we learn from each other. Ida |

Yes, there is, Patricia. I learn from them every time they come to visit my forest garden. Thank you for reading and enjoying and loving the monkeys and for your kind words. Thank you Ida. Yes, we do, don't we? What a beautiful haven our blue skies of PIP are! - Owl |
