Pizza, smiles and tears for two

It was almost eight pm
and we sat at the café
encircled by chaos,
when I heard you say
you wished it was the beginning
of the day instead of the end …
so we could sit together
for hours still and talk happily …
Your voice a sunray
piercing the mist …
The pizza got cold,
because you did not want
to waste time eating,
you concentrated
on conversation
and on listening.
Or was it soul talk?

And there were sudden
explosions of laughter,
the lightness of two beings
who felt good in their skin
and mirrored each other’s colour
in a perfectly harmonious blend,
for precious moments
which held deep understanding
and true wellbeing.

When we hugged good bye
you said you already missed me
and tears filled your eyes.
I took your hands in mine
to send a dusk invocation
to our common divine source,
for each other’s blessing
and for humanity’s awakening
                        to love.

You had told your Mother
you were going to meet me
and she sent her love to me.
To me, whom you choose
to be her European alter ego.
While she waits alone,
yet in joyful anticipation,
down there in faraway Africa,
for you to come home.

***

Dedicated to dear Oneka, my Nigerian friend.

Margherita, yours and Oneka's "soul talk" was  deeply meaningful and very touching. Thank you for sharing that special moment in time with your readers.

Love to you and to your friend Oneka ~ and to his mother in Nigeria!

Thank you so much all my dear friends for reading and for your kind comments. Patrick Oneka is a young man and his life as an immigrant here is not easy at all, so he is grateful for sincere friendship. The term “extra communitarian” is often used with a negative touch to it and we say there is something we have in common, in fact we are both “extra communitarian” here in Italy, because also Switzerland/my home country  is not part of the European Union/Community. But of course the reasons of our immigration are not the same … so many young African people try to enter Italy because of despair and they are even often rejected … it’s a sad sad world. That’s why I say we must awaken to love, to create the conditions for more dignified lives wherever in the world.

Thank you again.

Love,
Margherita

Oh Margherita how lucky is Patrick Oneka to have such a sincere friend as you. It must make him feel so happy to know that he is not only accepted but appreciated as well. The very best to you both and also Patrick's mum. God Bless you all.

You know, Margherita, I am usually very proud to call myself South African, but for the last few weeks I have not been.  There were some horrendous xenophobic attacks - mainly in the provinces of Gauteng and the Western Cape - not where I live (in KwaZulu-Natal) by black South Africans on black "foreigners" living in their midst - in some cases they had been living amongst the same South Africans for 14 years and more.  The refugees, legal immigrants and illegal immigrants were mainly from Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Somalia, Mozambique and a few ther countries.  No matter how poor and desperate the attackers were, nor how much they (incorrectly - for various reasons) believed that the "foreigners" were taking their jobs, there is no excuse for any such attacks.  I am too ashamed and embarrassed to detail what was done, but suffice to say that there were (if I remember correctly) about 60 people killed.  The worst irony of all is that about 20 or 25 of the people who were killed, weren't foreigners, but South Africans.  It was very strange that the attacks were simultaneous over the same few days in various parts of the country far away from each other.  However, these terrible orchestrated attacks only lasted a short while and they have stopped completely now, but there are thousands of "foreigners" being kept safe in very basic camps.  Some wanted help to go back to their own countries, and in spite of pleading with them to stay, some have gone back.  Some have been re-entered with caution into their communities, but there are many still living in the camps.  Certain measures have been put into place to try to prevent further outbreaks.  My point in all this, is that, especially after that, it is particularly lovely to hear such a happy story as you tell in your poem.  I have a friend called Njoki in Kenya whose safety I was very worried about in the recent unrest, and if I didn't hear from her for a while I would email her with my heart in my mouth until I had a reply and knew that she was still all right.  She assures me now that political stability has been restored and that the unrest is over.  I just wish we could say the same for Zimbabwe.

Anyway, thank you for being Margherita and being a safe haven for Patrick Oneka.  I didn't know you were in Italy.  I thought you were in America.

Dear Diana, thank you so much for your extensive reply on this. Humanity has still a long way to go in matters of mutual respect, dignity and love ... What you refer makes one want to cry out in despair, in every part of the world there are these peaks of xenophoby and there is only one way out ... to make everybody realize that every human being is equally worth to the one Divine Source where we spring from.
It will take time.

Good to know your friend is safe.

You are a precious presence on these pages of blue, dear Diana.

Love,
Margherita

I've been making it a habit
not to read replies so I can answer
solely to the poet, and the poem...

but I already sense that this voice
emcompasses continents...
and suppositions...

Why can't our governments understand that
the majority of our continents are already
understanding of one another?

thank you, m'friend...for your reach.
