An attempt was made in the 1980s To span the continent from sea to sea With a human chain, many tens of thousands Standing along a pre-planed route Fingertip to fingertip in an unbroken line Through amber waves and over purple majesties In a grand gesture of egalitarian unity And because, at the time, I was keeping company With hopeful, earnest young women I was compelled to participate lest my contrivances Fall away to reveal my apathy So I stood there, hand in hand with ardent and avid Staring down at the softening tar and macadam Harboring the certain secret knowledge That should the event come to fruition, should Humanity arrange itself into a single strand, Unbroken, my presence there would be its undoing I would, by my nature, short circuit the rapture I don’t recall the date, only that it was summer and Sunny enough to sparkle the aggregate in the asphalt The gleaming bits of Quartz, Feldspar and Mica Especially, I remember the Mica, diamond bright And glittering like stars from amid the tarry firmament |

Hands Across America. Brought back memories. Oprah came to our school the week before as she was PRing it. The date must have been about May 30th because my sister graduated college, oh yeah - and I graduated high school, hmmm, why didn't I remember that part? Hands across America was a shambles and a shame and didn't work. Nice thought, sad attempt. Many towns couldn't get enough people to keep the line going. Thanks for making me think back to it. |

Another Wranx-brilliant sparkling gem! I love the way the reality and cynicism explodes inwards into a Wranx-inspiration/realisation/thought at the end - illustrative of the fact that exquisite creations can come from mundane and/or ludicrous beginnings. Too bad we get to read you so seldom! Good to see you. Please stay around a while longer this time. - Owl |

Oh, Ed, this is brilliantly written but painful to read, especially this morning after watching a news broadcast from Connecticut, where an elderly man was the victim of a hit-and-run on a busy city street after 5PM (rush hour?), and people walked around/drove around him and did nothing to assist him beyond calling 911. This is indifference at its height. So much for hand holding in America, where apparently no one really gives a damn. I hope I'm never in need of a good Sam. Thank you for inspiring me to write about this morning's 'indifference' tragedy. [This message has been edited by Midnitesun (06-06-2008 12:55 PM).] |

I always love your poetry, Ed and I remember "Hands Across America." I also understand why it didn't work. I especially love this line, "I would, by my nature, short curcuit the rapture." I so enjoyed your realistic view of this failed experiment. Ida |

Dear Ed, this is very thought provoking and captivating in its nature ...(and your own poetic nature). I think humanity does possess the ability to connect seamlessly in its whole, but the awareness of this truth is far from being accepted. We would not even need to touch with hands, to touch in thought would be enough. Love, Margherita |

Well it was about time you came back to gift us with your poetic, ponderings! ~ and it was worth the wait! btw, I don't believe that you have a single apathetic bone in your big, yeti body! lol This nostalgic write was like "Mica, diamond bright And glittering like stars from amid the tarry firmament". Don't be such a stranger! You've been missed! Giving you a big, warm hug, Linda |

Hi Wranx, Loved: I don’t recall the date, only that it was summer and Sunny enough to sparkle the aggregate in the asphalt The gleaming bits of Quartz, Feldspar and Mica Best, Corinne |
