SUNDAY COMFORT
13 August 2006

Like the slow-note embrace of evensong,
heavy-scented on the darkening air;
like the sky diffused with sun-paintings,
blessing my muddied fingers
and my horse’s
gardened grave;
like the sunrise strokes
on trunk edges
in honour of the dawn chorus;
so is this, my quivering Sunday morning,
in this hallowed place of adoration,
a coat of many stained-glass colours,
bonding song with all that is sunbeam-pure.

Diana, your beloved Flicker will always be with you ~ wherever you may be. However, I understand the closeness you feel to him when you sit by his graveside with the sun shining down on a beautiful Sunday morning.

Love to both of you!

Sorry, Alison, I missed your reply.  Thank you so much.

Linda, you understand SO well about Flicka.  Thank you.  The poem was actually about being in my very warm-hearted church.  I was saying that it is like working in the garden I created at Flicka's grave and the other things I mentioned in the poem.  I don't blame anyone for thinking that the poem was all about him, especially if they have walked the road with me since he went to Heaven.

Thank you Martie, especially for sitting beside me.  I know you understand about Flicka.

Thank you Richie.  Flicka didn't know the word "dislike".  He adored all people and animals.  I used to offer a million rand (our currency in South Africa) to anyone who could get him to kick or bite them, knowing that it would just never happen - fortunately for me as I didn't have 2 cents to rub together.  A complete stranger could have walked up to him and jammed their hand into his mouth roughly.  He would have opened his mouth as wide as possible so as not to hurt the person's hand and turned his head away from the hand.  I used to hold his bridle next to his face and he would turn his head and open his mouth and put it over the bit.  We used to have the longest conversations about all sorts of things.  He was/is one of my children and the best friend I have/ever had.

Diana, after reading your response to my own, I reread your lovely poem with a new understanding. It is so beautiful. I love the feel of it.

I trust that angel Flicka will forgive my faux pas regarding his name.

Much love and hugs,
Linda

No, my darling angel Flicka won't forgive you, Linda - he says there is NOTHING TO FORGIVE!  Smiles from me and nuzzles from Flicka.  He was/is the most loving horse/animal/person I have met in 62½ years and that is saying a lot!  He would have particularly adored you, Linda, if he had met you.

Uniquely beautiful, dear Diana! I feel like tiptoeing out of this sunlit scene, honoring the sacredness of this place.

Magical poem.
