This was written while watching "The Mask", a Korean war story movie about a soldier (Paul Newman) who broke under torture and his court martial as well as his relationship to his father (Walter Pidgeon).  Forgive the word plays, please.

the hand of the pigeon

the hand of the pigeon touched the new man
as failure flocked upon the scene
a father’s failings to the son’s prevailings
as discipline deters decision keen

both have fallen short, yet both have won
neither complementing nor keeping
the path on which they’ve traveled
free from loud tears or sad weeping

meeting at a crossroads not of their own making
facing life as life roughly meets
to grind them together as both become one
in history’s calling as it rapidly flees

and the mask of betrayal appalls them each
faltered in weakness,  beyond their reach

AAB & Caliban, thanks for your gracious and kind remarks (if you do get to watch the movie...highly recommended, the poem comes from the cab scene) -- it's in b&w
