Listening to every heart

Full Breath [revised] On Intake

“The human ego is a fragile thing,
but I wouldn't say it unless I saw
the potential in you to achieve it...”

RCR…

It was then I took the fullest breath,
to stay some tear from welling, as
heartstrings were plucked quite tight,
and this great love, it’s still swelling…

how many times was this little boy
the bane of my existence,
how many times did I taunt his life,
and oh, we were persistent

for we were to be each other’s rock
on which we would someday stand,
though time and tide has ticked the clock
I knew his secret was to have a band,

though no one else might know this share,
he knew mine…was to write on air…

Oh, I might pound him on the arm,
then he would parry forth in glee,
we would wrestle, but no harm
would come to my brother, nor me…

but let no one else come in
to this secret ring of taunt
the memories are falling forth so fast…
it’s strange how they still sing in haunt…

and then I took the fullest breath
for who knows when we shall see
the face of each other again,
hey, Robert…hey, Karilea…

He lives on in streams and dreams
I hear some gurgle and his behest
to follow forward, and, it seems
he holds me ever close to his chest

but then he lets me loose to find my way
and heeds that "back" I shall not see;
he finds a course that I should stay
and only in dreams shall he be.

~*~

Somehow, someway,
his music lives on,
even if it only reigns
in this heart of me.

~*~

This write began on 3-9-03
Yet, I don’t feel it is finished,
even now.

~*~

Tonight, on 2-05-08, I remember more than my brother, and I thank Ron, and Nan, for making our Remember place of peace.

You have moved me deeper than tears.

I, also, had a brother named Robert - and your poem speaks of a relationship that I have known.

Our refrain was:

Hey, Robby
Hey, Liz

I hear it still and I smile.

Thank you, Karilea.

It is a gift that he comes in dreams and you hear his music and feel him close. This is very very beautiful and poignant. I have seen the beautiful remembrance in that special place and I think it is really something that holds us deeply united.

Love and hugs,

Karilea, your poem moved me to go back into PiP's "Place of Peace". For those who have not visited it, I thought I would include his bio in my reply. God bless him ~ and you.

Robert joined PiPtalk on May 7, 2004.  He began his life in Los Angeles, California, later growing into adulthood in Santa Maria, and spent his good times in San Luis Obispo and later in Arroyo Grande.  He stayed “near the sea” where all life begins, Sissie.  He had a child by his first wife, and in a second marriage, adopted his step-children who remained close to him at the end of his life. Relationships seemed difficult for him, because his first passion was, and remained to the end, his music.  Before ill health overrode his musical dreams, Robert helped form a couple of bands, the last being,

"The Official Undertow,"and he enjoyed the process of creating music and writing lyrics by melding minds and psyches.  He worked in the computer field most of his adult life, before his illness kept him from moving on in life 24/7.  He knew life could be made better, by extending an open palm, an open heart, and an open mind.  He took those three things with him, and continues to play music to his heart’s content.

Dear Sissie....time has memory for a reason.

"though no one else might know this share,
he knew mine…was to write on air…"

He was right.

A most moving write but of course it is because one can know it comes from the heart that dreams and listens still to the music.  I never knew my brothers the way you knew yours so you are indeed blessed to have such good memories.

I came here because you are my first contact in PIP, out of mild curiosity.

I shall take away knowledge of someone who must have been a wonderful person, and of your sad loss too.

(I could not write anything about my own sister's death, but Leonard Cohen's song, "Alexandra Leaving" serves as a reminder instead.  As you will know, there is nothing on Earth more powerful than music and words.)

This is a stunning elegy.  Thank-you.

in other words you have to read a lot of poems before you find one as wonderful as this one.

I know this well, as I have one unfinished myself, and I suppose it always will be.
