Way of the Future A lump of coal, a drop of oil, take a shovel and turn the soil! Deplete the earth of her treasure trove; destroy it all for her silver and gold. But, take a shovel and turn the soil, grow wheat and corn or beans to double and what you have is energy to burn, both today and tomorrow! |

Farmers have an uphill battle and are under-appreciated but that is exactly what they have been doing since time began. Joyce |

Yes, indeed! Turning the soil and planting seeds is the "Way of the Future" ~ not our digging for gold! Enjoyed your thoughts on this subject! EA |

I love the smell of the soil when it is turned and I love the feel of warm dirt on my fingers when I plant my garden. I am not a farmer, and I am happy when my garden becomes more than a 'Moose fast food drive through'. But, I tell myself that they have to eat too. Alison |

R v wooo, What's needed is more rice, and corn, less ethanol, and more horses. Walking is good for people. Shoot your gas guzzler, and move to the city. Bobby |

People and animals should eat corn, not automobiles. SUVs are a crime against humanity. Think nitrogen fixation. Legumes are good at that. Bobby [This message has been edited by Robert E. Jordan (04-27-2008 06:36 PM).] |

alison, you took me back to 1963. it was at the argonne national labortory and a study on "the smell of the soil". in short, the study discovered the refreshing smell in soil, that we associate with plowed earth. it, actually comes from a chemical released by a common soil bacterium species when the soil is broken and followed by a shower. bobby, i agree with your concerns. technology thrives off of energy and we are feeding a monster...humankind's dependence is overwhelming and i see no positive end in sight..it is as though the world wants to eat its cake and have it, too. the efforts by detoted and others resulted in a dismal failure. kimberly and sharyn, thank you for reading and sharing your comments with me.
