"This Chaotic Earth" There’s nothing quite as beautiful That brings my heart respite Than walking with my thoughts alone Throughout the soothing night The bedlam of the day has passed The world has slowed its pace Breathe deep the evening’s cool air And feel the dark’s embrace And though, most times, I’m by myself I’m never quite alone Surrounded by the memories Of friends I’ve lost and known They walk with me and comfort me And lend to me their ears While as we go I speak to them And tell them of my fears More oft than not they laugh at me For being so severe “We’re with you” say these friends of mine “What have you then to fear?” At first I always take offense, How nonchalant they sound! But in their simple words I know A crucial truth is found: When one is blessed with kindred souls Who comfort night and day What reason do we have to fear? What cause to feel dismay? “You’re right, of course” I then admit And join them in their mirth And for a time I feel at peace On this chaotic Earth AMdG "My candle burns at both ends; it will not last the night; but ah, my foes, and oh, my friends--it gives a lovely light!" -Edna St. Vincent Millay |
