Last Train South
By Paul Wilson

I’ve had to deal with broken dreams
and promises most all my life
Learned to tuff it out thru
the bad times filled with strife

I’ve ridden the rails from Boston to L.A.
suffered thru rain, heat and snow
Met a few people that really were strange
between Louisiana and Idaho

Washed my clothes on the river bank
as my prayers turned to doubt
Found the true meaning of life
and what I could live without

Hot cup of coffee on a crisp fall morn
warms me up for the day ahead
Heading South for the winter
hoping to find a job and warm bed

Worked my way down to Memphis
made some friends got drunk and sang the blues
Thirty days of wasted time working for the man
eight by eight cell I made the six o’clock news

Caught a freight late one night
where it would take me I didn’t know
Woke up about noon the next day
to the sweet smell of hot gumbo

New Orleans home of the blues
red beans and rice seafood galore
Back to my roots I’ve come full circle
I’ll ride these rails of memories no more

I hear the train whistle blowing
as it pulls out the yard
The rails are calling me back
fighting the temptation to roam is hard

Paul~
What a WONDERFUL trip you've taken me on~

'Found the true meaning of life
and what I could live without'

Ah ... and that is only learned by living without those things we think we couldn't possibly live without~

Dear Paul, I have read this the other day, but could not reply immediately, now I read it again and the emotion you bring is strong, as you really convey a tough journey, but did settle down in the sea of consciousness that tells us we are in the right place where we are.
I always enjoy your deep sensitiveness and wisdom, the beauty of your soul.

Love,
Margherita

It sounds like an adventure.
Was It an adventure for you?
Now that the hard part is over is it pleasant to return to these memories?

Margherita...Your generous reply fills my heart with the reason I write. Thank you so very much for allowing me to entertain you and for being a loyal reader...Paul

rad802...I must admit this was purely a fictional journey, but in my youth I thought about hopping a freight train and seeing where it would take me. Thanks for taking time to read and reply...Paul

Paul that is one great poem,

It must take a lot of guts to do something

like that but I dare say it brings with it a lot of excitement. enjoyed.

Lindsay...Thanks for taking time to read.
Yes I would imagine it would take alot of guts to hop on a train not knowing where it would take you. I think if I were a young man I would try it one time just for the excitement of it...Paul
