When I Was But Thirteen Or So When I was but thirteen or so, I still had dreams and even though They were both lofty and obscure I still believed they could occur. When I was but thirteen. When I was twenty-one years old, These dreams, though less, were still quite bold And I, with energy to spare, Believed my will would get me there. When I was twenty-one. When I was forty-four and grown, I strove to make my dreams my own But found, like most, the road we take Impacts all choices that we make. When I was forty-four. Now I am nigh on sixty-eight, Deceived by time, ten years too late, Too old for dreams born in my youth; I’m scorned and jaded by the truth. Now that I’m sixty-eight. Though, when I was but thirteen or so, I still had dreams and even though They were both lofty and obscure I still believed they could occur, When I was but thirteen. I am nothing special...and my name will soon be forgotten, but I've loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me,this has always been enough.~N.S [This message has been edited by hoot_owl_rn (04-11-2008 11:02 PM).] |

I'm not quite yet 68, but darlin', I do hear you - and well indeed. Is there ever any real good time to give up on one's dreams? Naw...I don't think so. |

Ruth, This is a nice poem--however, at sixty-eight, you're just a spring chicken. There are still many things to look forward to, and dream about. Bobby |

Hi Ruth, I am 64 and I do understand this poem. I guess acceptance and wisdom is what we have left and our only choice is to make the best use of them that we can. But I intend to complain whenever I feel like it , makes me feel better. Ida |

Thank you all for your comments. As always on my poems I took some poetic liberties Just to set the record straight here I am not 68 infact I just turned 45 in Jan. But I think any age is old enough to lose sight of our dreams if we don't continue to believe in them and more important believe in ourselves Ruth |

Ruth, What you say is true. I’m seventy-one, going on one hundred and ten. In warm weather, I sit out in front of the house in my foldable chair. What’s sad is some of the young children I see, little kids from here in the hood as young as ten that come up and bum a quarter from me. Of course I always give them one. You look in their eyes, and you can see, they’re almost ready to give it up. An old business associate of mine from Cartaghena, Colombia once told me: "Hope is always the last thing to go." So hang in there. Bobby |

I think perhaps there are different dreams for different seasons of our lives...the dream to love always remains...James |

I'm 33 and I always expected as I got older my dreams and aspirations to change, but they don't do they? |

Oh!My! Oh! My! What did I aspire to at the ripe ole age of thirteen? As I remember correctly....I was riding my bike with my girlfriend and drooling over cute boys. As for work it didn't enter my mind to much. I loved art and music so maybe that was my goal. But, mainly it was looking at cute boys. This is a lovely write you have here dear poet. Hugs BonBon |
