Old Felix has all the money he needs. He’s what you’d call “comfortable”. Down at the club, he’ll often sit and listen to other old geezers talk about how happy their childhood was, and how they’d love to return to those gossamer bygone days. Felix reminds them that they’re somewhat demented. There is no such thing, as “The happy childhood”— it does not, never did, and never will exist anywhere in nature. It’s all a total and mindless fabrication. Some people are just never satisfied with themselves. Bobby [This message has been edited by Robert E. Jordan (04-11-2008 09:58 AM).] |

I think some people have much better experiences than others and some remember things the way they wish they had been. I usually see things pretty much the way they were. My childhood was a bit of a train wreck (but not as bad as some, I guess)and yet when I write I like to write about some of the good things I remember (even if I have to reach for them.) Ida |

Ida, Thanks for the reminder. I do remember stealing one of those plastic magic square puzzles. I did enjoy that puzzle, and of course there was always my Yo-Yo. Bobby |

Sadly Felix did not experience a happy childhood and so that has shaped his view of childhood...mine was good and bad. Reminds me of a visit to a health food store, and the woman was recommending a herb that restores memory, and I told her that I didn't want to restore my memory, because some were fond but some were not so fond...she thought that I had the wrong attitude about that...perhaps I do, because at times I have wonderful memories of my childhood...James |

I agree with the others. I think most people 'borrow' nice experiences and adopt them as their own, the 'ideal' childhoods are less commonplace than we hear... |

It breaks my heart that he had such a horrible childhood. Tammy<333 |

Dear Tammy<333, Felix's childhood was really run-of-the mill. As he says, the happy childhood doesn't really exist. He always had his corner friend Butch, and Wawa, and that crowd. They were his real family. Bobby |
