Daddy's Treasure Chest

“I got this for you Daddy” is the little song he sings
He doesn’t really understand the happiness he brings
“Come and look at what I made” are words I often hear
I have a little box that holds these treasures oh so dear

We call it Daddy’s Treasure Chest and it’s a special place
For kept inside are gifts that bring a smile to my face
From time to time I’ll take it out whenever I feel down
It never fails to cheer me up and take away my frown

Inside are little trinkets that no one would care to see
But they are much more precious than a diamond ring to me
A little hand drawn picture of the “Super Devil Dude”
Some marbles and some colored rocks are things that I include

Each item is a memory of loving times we’ve had
A penny and a colored heart that says “I love you Dad”
A hardened piece of bubble gum he brought me home from school
To me this little heartfelt gift’s more precious than a jewel

There’s a little colored sea shell that fills my heart with bliss
Because he told me “Daddy we don’t have one that’s like this”
It really didn’t matter that I had six more of them
This one’s very special because it was a gift from him

A rusty bolt and washer and a burned out little fuse
Things that he found in the street he thought that I might use
A little plaster handprint with a date scratched on the back
A yo-yo with a broken string and a shiny bright thumb tack

A plastic purple dinosaur and a box of pencil lead
His favorite book of stories that so many times we read
An old pair of sunglasses that are cracked next to the rim
A broken rubber band to make a great sling shot for him

And when my son gets older then I hope he’ll understand
How great a gift he gave me with that broken rubber band
And how much love is stored inside that little cardboard box
Mixed with all the marbles, shells, and the little colored rocks

Each item is a gift of love and memory of fun
Given to a father by his precious loving son
And if you ever ask of me what gifts I love the best
I’ll show you an old worn out box called Daddy’s Treasure Chest

OhSteve~
My eyes are leaking with the tenderness of this~

I am going to share it with my son this evening~
His birthday was Monday, and I gave him a write-your-story- in it book titled 'A Father's Legacy', where he could record moments just like this for his precious girlies~

Thank you, thank you, thank you - for being a daddy and a poet~

Steve,

Most any man can father a child, however, you, are a "true" daddy.

This is a most beautiful piece of your heart that you have written.

Steve,

This is excellent writing.  It's an enjoyable read.

I have four kids, all grown now.  The youngest one is thirty-nine.  I never remember them ever bring me things like that.

Reading your poem, I kind of wish they would have.  Perhaps I was too unapproachable, or perhaps they did bring me things, but I just didn't notice.

I'm still very close to all of them.

Oh my goodness.  I have to blow my nose, that one got me.  All warm and everything, and it's honest and simple and doesn't have anything in it but real feeling and love.  Excellent!

This is a wonderful poem that brings little tears of joy in remembrance of my relationship with my father, I will always feel his absence, especially when I rummage through his tool box, and remember a time he sent me to fetch one!

Have a nice day, my friend!

Hi Steve:  This is completely charming and heart touching! You are right, our children grow up far too fast and there are times they don't grow up at all!

Best wishes

Thanks for the kind words Nan, I appreciate it.

K-K I'm glad it brought a smile, that little box always brings me one.

Thanks for reading Paul, I appreciate hearing from you.

Art, I have similar memories and I hope my son will have them as well. Thanks for commenting.

Hey John, I have a son and a daughter and they are both pretty special. Take care buddy.

Hi Betty Lou, I know I've never grown up all the way and probably won't. Good to hear from you.

Toe, don't go gettin' too serious on me buddy, I count on you to get my chuckles. Thanks for reading.

Take care all. Steve
