These little ones,
These futures
Stumbling around in diapers,
Ah, what can you do
But hold them
As if they were your own life,
Your own breath
In the fragile ocean of air
That envelopes the earth?

But what do the headlines
So often, and so painfully say?
“Parents Held in Brutal Slaying . . .”

Alas, what dark force
Bends and breaks the mind,
Sending it hurtling backward
Into the dark fog
Of an ancient forest,
Where lurks the carnivore
Standing erect, and knowing
No god but hunger and blood . . .

Very powerful statement, Art. This issue is so heartbreaking.

I am ever more appalled at violence against innocents, or for that matter violence in all it forms. As a poet I am trying to understand the roots of this darkness within us, and I think of your recent poem about looking inward. Sometimes we see things we don't like, but we need to take heed in these times with urgency.

Thanks,

Art

We humans are very complex, yann. We are capable of expressing great love, and equally capable of violence. I think the important thing is that we try to understand what we are capable of, and seek to do that which is advantageous to the attainment of happiness. On a personal level, I believe that God is the source of our origin, and through science and theology we are seeking to know our place and purpose in the universe. And I wish us all well.

Reading this disturbs me. This problem, however, also exists in the country that I reside in - Japan.  Occasionally in the news there is a spate of attacks against elementary school children.  Perhaps only God could have mercy in His heart for such monsters - if they show forgiveness.  But these demons only inspire hatred in me.
