My grandad passed away last year after a short battle with cancer. I wrote this poem to read out at his funeral but decided I couldnt do it the vicar was going to do it instead. On the day I decided I didnt want it reading, when I spoke to the vicar he said he had forgotten to bring the copy I sent him. I just found out not long ago that he actually spoke to my nan and that the poem had moved him so much he couldnt bring himself to read it at the service for fear of him crying. She asked him not to read it. As a result she has never heard it but i had it laminated and the other day stuck it on his headstone....... so heaven has received another angel the night sky another star your life has become a loving memory I know you will never be far I know you are watching over me as my life goes on I will treasure the memories i have of you I cant believe you're gone you were a loving caring grandad you were there for me a lot you will always hold a special place in my heart a loving treasured spot you were really one in a million a cut above the rest all that knew you would agree you simply were the best so grandad i will say goodbye i love and miss you with all my heart but as long as i have my loving memories we will never be too far apart |

Sarah, I believe that your Grandfather was watching over your shoulder as you wrote this. He knows - and he loves you. I am glad that you placed this on his headstone, but he read it long ago and probably wiped your tears. When my brother died, I tucked a letter in his pocket that I had written to him two days before he died. He never got a chance to read it then, but I think he carries it now and the paper is well worn from his reading it over and over. We love those who have left us and they know that our love does not die with them. You have shared a beautiful part of your life - thank you. I can see why your poem choked up the Vicar. It choked me up too. Alison |
