                My Working Life

It started many years ago when I left school for keeps,
Glad to leave that wretched place, it was giving me the creeps,
I was thirteen & a half years old & hated school with a zest,
Ready now to face my working life & give it my very best.

My first job was in a shearing shed, a job where I was able
To pick up wool when it was shorn & throw it on the table,
To keep pens full for the shearer’s & sweep clean the floor,
To bale the wool, draft the sheep & odd jobs by the score.

That was my first paying job though I had worked at home for free
But money was very short back then & home payment not to be,
I started driving the eight- horse team & soon acquired the knack,
To plough & harrow & sow the seed & learn to build a stack.

Before my fourteenth birthday I went picking grapes up north,
At Redcliffs & at Carwarp & where I dodged the boss’s wrath,
After the drought in 45, I worked for many months on end
Cleaning drift-sand out of channels, but it paid a good dividend.

Then in 44 in a raging drought we went to Mortlake for a year,
Took most of our furniture and quite a lot of other gear,
I got a job in the blacksmith shop & learned how to shoe a horse,
To make the shoes & tack them on & do my best of course.

At the age of eighteen I thought it time to plan life’s path
Little did I realize then the outcome, as I look back in aftermath?
I decided to become an Auctioneer, so to Newmarket yards I went
Full of hope & enthusiasm to face this life changing event.

For two & a half years I penned up cattle, sheep and lambs,
Worked hard at special sheep-sales where we handled lots of rams
But when that time expired I looked for something new,
I was sick of a lot of night work & a share job came into view.

I started on a share-farm out at Epping & milked a lot of cows,
Swept the shed, fed the calves along with several sows,
This enabled me to save some money so I leased a dairy farm,
The wife & I were partners, she possessed much more than charm.

Ten years soon slipped away, we sold out & bought a shop,
A milk bar in Ivanhoe, the dairy farm we gave the chop,
It was just six months later that we flew our flag unfurled,
For we sold out with profit great & took a trip around the world.

All good things come to an end & I had to don the working collar,
Thirty years of driving trucks began, in my quest to earn a dollar,
I turned our farm into a Tourist Park in my fight to keep ahead,
We grew a maze, put in a lake & an animal nursery shed.

We’ve had ups & downs along the way but we’ve finished up on top,
I worked hard through my working days but finally came the stop,
I now look back on a happy life & wonder where the time has flown
But I accept each day, one at a time, and thank God I’m not alone.

To jwesley, Bobby, Roniece, Alison, James, Maureen and Ida, It gives me great pleasure
to know that you enjoyed my life story, humble though it may be. You mention my attitude, well I've always looked at the glass as being half full not half empty, as so many people seem to do. About forty years ago I had a bad truck accident and broke the verterbrae in my neck. I was feeling a bit down at the time when a friend gave me a book to read, 'The Power of Positive Thinking' by Norman Vincent Peale. In it he told the story about a train trip he made across America. When entering the men's washroom the next morning he found some one else there having a shave. Shortly after this another chap came into the wash room, singing at the top of his voice. The first chap glanced at him and said, 'what the hell are you singing about at this hour of the morning,' Well, said the singer, 'Every morning when I get up, I make one of two choices, am I going to be happy today or am I going to be sad, And I find that being happy is the only way to be, for things are never as bad as they seem. I hope my good friends that you are not bored by my little story, but it is something I have never forgotten. It is a book that I think would be beneficial to anyone who is feeling a bit depressed, it certainly helped me. God Bless you all.
