Felix finds Fred lying in the gutter,
over at Second and Poplar.

Some wild, poor, stupid, deranged punks
have beaten him senseless,
for no reason.

Fred didn’t have any money,
and they must have known that.

What can Felix do,
Fred is a big man.
Felix can’t pick him up,
and carry him to the hospital
as Fred did for him.

Felix runs into a restaurant on Second Street,
tells the cashier that his dad’s been robbed,
and he’s lying in the gutter outside.

Which of course
is a complete fabrication—
a lie.
Who cares?

Can you call the cops?

The cashiers glad
to help the kid out.
He calls the cops.

The cops tenderly pick Fred up,
they take him to a hospital.

Felix visits Fred in the hospital
every day,
and he brings his Mom along.

Bobby

What goes around comes around. If only everyone understood that simple concept.

Ida,

What you say is very true.  I wish I understood that concept better my self.  That would make the world a better place, by a little bit.

ahh this poem rings so many meanings in my head, all of them good indeed. Fred could be ANY one, anyone.

good work at keeping it both detailed and satisfyingly vague.

Ocean Vuong,

Thanks for the kind word.  I'm always vague.

Yes, Fred could be anyone, and anyone could be Fred.

In this case, he's lucky to have a Felix around him, who just happens to owe him.

Dear RDB,

Felix never was the bad guy people would have you believe he was.

Im not surprised by what Felix did. I never thought of him as bad just not as fortunate as a lot of other kids. He only doe's what he needs to do to keep warm or a full stomach. It also proves what I always figured that he was one smart kiddo...nice one Felix

Thanks Seoulair,

Felix likes to take care of his friends.  You learn that pretty quick here in the hood.

Felix says hello, and thanks for the kind words.
