cold feet

there is a passage,
one i have not taken in awhile,
gaping, gasping, hoping for my treads
just beyond that door

the portal closes by inches as i give myself away
in inches, steps, and promises, promises
and i watch the emptiness in me
grow, and grow, and grow.

there were glances…
mine, yours, but mostly mine,
that communicated something soft, delicious
and wrong

but while that hallway beckons
and as i step to bar your entry,
i also deftly block
escape.
