The storm has passed, carrying away the thunder and the snakes of fire that fueled my mother's prayer. I go out to the backyard where the sink in the bare earth has become an ocean, reflecting the remnant of clouds. I make paper ships and set sail. I am a merchant captain, then a pirate, then a great admiral defeating the enemy of the realm. My soggy, sinking fleet diminishes as the supply of school paper reaches the danger point, where Mother will scold me for wasteful ventures of the mind. Then I hear Mother calling me to supper, and the world is once again real, as real as hunger, and shabby clothes and the fears of ghostly night. |

I remember the violent thunderstorms of Arkansas in the 40s and 50s, and the deep dark woods. We had no street lights where I was born and grew up. And, not to forget, we were dirt poor. |

Hello art, i'm pleased to read you here, your poem talk to me a lot cause i really estimate the imagination of the children, she is pure and authentic and it seems to me that somehow she is fantastic, a paper boat and you create an awesome world of pure fantasy....Your poem is great art... Thanks yann |

Excellent writing, Art. I love your poems about childhood, perhaps because they remind me of my own childhood. Ida |

Thanks, Ida and yann. It is comforting to see you on this site, as well as AP. My family's big celebration of 50 years in Las Vegas has ended after three wondrous days, and I can now get back to what I love---reading and writing, and conversing with friends. |

Art, Nice write--I remember consulting in Pine Bluff. I always liked Arkansas. It's a nice friendly place, with nice friendly people. Bobby |

What a fine write! Your imagery allows the reader to be transported right to the water's edge, to watch that paper boat set sail. Then...to a hungry reader, you ring the dinner bell invitation. Thank you for an enjoyable read. |

I like it. You made it easy to see both worlds even for those of us whose childhood worlds were somewhat different. I enjoyed its images and the flow and pace of how you brought it together. |
