Footprints Of The Past Returning to my childhood, my mind turns back the clock And I think again of memories that will forever last, I reminisce on bygone days & on my childhood days take stock And happily do I tread again in those footprints of the past. I grew up in the thirties in those depression hungry years, Where not to waste a single thing was certainly not a fable, Where our stable diet was mutton to allay our hunger fears And the rabbit played a mighty part upon the kitchen table. Thinking of my first day at school & tears as a matter of course And to say it was a happy day would definitely not be true Pop took me off to school that day behind him on the horse Where I was supposed to learn & bid my pre-school days adieu. I remember well those days at school & the fun &games we had Although we had to walk two miles across the dusty plain, Most memories were quite good though some were rather bad But to mention any one of these I certainly must refrain. I remember one time at school when school sores were rife And one mother’s cure was to give sulphur & honey to her son, She said it was a wondrous cure & would maintain a healthier life But there was another darker side of which we boys made fun. The down side was that it had a terrible affect upon the bowels And to misbehave before the teacher certainly wasn’t the rule, Although it was quite unbearable, for the smell was horribly foul And we had to suffer the consequence in that tiny one room school. At weekends we’d go rabbiting with the ferrets and the dogs, As that was the only way we could earn some pocket money, For through the war years rabbit skins were worth a tidy bob And we all enjoyed the tasty meat supplied by the humble bunny. Money was so very scarce back in those youth full years But it taught us how to thrifty be & only buy what we would need, And though we always paid our bills they were often in arrears But it never done us any harm and caution was the creed. It all happened over sixty years ago and it’s nice to reminisce For I wouldn’t change those memories for the die has long been cast, To return once more to childhood, I place great emphasis To see again and walk again in those footprints of the past. |

Money was so very scarce back in those youth full years But it taught us how to thrifty be & only buy what we would need, And though we always paid our bills they were often in arrears But it never done us any harm and caution was the creed. And there is quite a lesson in this for us, now coping with this market- and waste-oriented society which could need some balance ... Sometimes it's nice to remember the past and you do it so well and in a colorful way, dear Lindsay. Love, Margherita |

LP, I always enjoy reading your reminisces. You take me to times and places, where I have never been before. ~ And might I also say, you do it in such a way as to have me feeling as though I am actually experiencing your reminisces! All of your life experiences have lead to you becoming the man that you are today! ~ So even the difficult ones ~ were good! lol Love to you, Aussie Man! Linda |

Hard times for sure, but you know LP, I am glad you went through all that because that is what made you the guy we love to see on here to relate your wondeful tales...I would so love to sit around a bush camp fire with you and listen to you tell them... Good job John |
