There were no trains to Oz Until the tourist came and the debate over an airport Was settled by the fact Munchkins can’t reach The cargo hold to unload luggage But they could act as porters even when too far in cups To truly walk straight or make sense When they talked in their nasal way About the witches union or the way health care Was a rising expense since the pox Had infected nearly all the little tarts And thus the men
Still here I stood Upon this yellow paved platform Waiting amid the chaos of little lives like my own Though none were cased in tin as mine Waiting for the scream of whistle announcing That Dorothy might be back Might descend the steps in her odd way Of tangled curls and cloth And see me smile
I stood like this now Every day in wait for the jostle of crowd to subside While I checked feet for slippers rubied upon toes Wondering if when she came She would see through the hollow of my chest And notice how the ticked clock where stood Other’s hearts was an old gesture I held for reasons beyond those of sentiment Or of even love as is usual In this land of flying hordes And charlatans who with smoke and mirrors Often conjure up a glittering façade While bored and jaded children as we are Jeer to ourselves inside
It is not time I think as I check the clock upon my chest Then twist the stem a half turn tighter Trying not to break a fragile spring that’s not seen oil Or the tender rest as might be given other Less mechanical toys not used for some semblance Of the heart I thought I must have The half that I missed
I think a pint Straight 30 weight will do It’s warmed enough to flow easily within the warmth of sun And I could use the lube For these days now the train’s soot creeps within And I grow stiff to the slow of creaking joints
There’s always The 8:15 And maybe she will disembark then With face aglow And the real reason for my heart Within hers
** so ends the first chapter of Dream Chronicles in Oz

Melville may have been correct when, in Moby Dick (I believe) there is mention that True Places are never put on any map.
This Oz of yours is like that.
